Grey’s Anatomy season 18 has featured an unexpected turn in Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) love life. Going into the season, fans were hoping she would get the chance to connect with Dr. Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood), aka McWidow.

But in the season premiere, the sudden return of Scott Speedman’s Dr. Nick Marsh has changed the narrative. Will Meredith and Nick get serious? Will they make things official in the upcoming Thanksgiving episode?

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ added Scott Speedman as a series regular for season 18

It was pretty clear in the first couple of episodes of season 18 that Nick is poised to be Meredith’s next love interest on Grey’s Anatomy. The undeniable chemistry between the two first appeared in a one-off episode back in season 14. And showrunner Krista Vernoff was on a mission to get Speedman back on the ABC medical drama to see where a possible relationship could go.

Vernoff was finally able to win Speedman over and convince him to return to the series in season 18. And this time, he’s a series regular. The showrunner has even confessed that once Speedman signed on, she planned the season around him.

The show’s loyal fan base has strong, mixed opinions about Dr. Nick Marsh

Speedman admits that the fan reaction from the show’s passionate fanbase has been mixed. However, the Felicity alum is confident he can win over the skeptics.

“I did see some of the fan reactions seem to be sort of split either way on who I was and what I was doing there. And there seemed to be some anger towards me being there at all,” Speedman told Entertainment Tonight.

“The cool part about it, I guess, when you’re doing a show that’s been on for 17, 18 seasons, obviously, you have a very loyal fan base. And in this particular case, loyal and passionate. They’re very protective of that character, Meredith’s character. So they want the best for her and… it’s a thing. So we’ll see. I’ll win them over.”

Meredith gets stuck in Minnesota for the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Thanksgiving episode

The Grey’s Anatomy Thanksgiving episode is airing on Thursday, November 18 — one week before the actual holiday. The preview indicates that Meredith will be stuck in Minnesota due to her flight getting canceled. Which could result in her spending the holiday with Nick instead of her kids.

Nick tells her that he has rented a cabin for the holiday weekend, but it’s not clear if Meredith accepts his invitation. But after that sexy kiss they shared, a romantic weekend alone could end up with them taking their relationship to the next level and making things official with some sexy time.

What about Dr. Hayes?

When Dr. Hayes first arrived at Grey Sloan, he was sent there by Meredith’s bestie, Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). Her intention was to make Hayes Meredith’s next love interest. But, that’s not how things have played out.

The two tried dating for a bit, which didn’t go over well with Hayes’ son. Now, Meredith is in Minnesota half the time, which is where Nick works. And, it’s clear that something is brewing between the two. So, where does all of this leave Hayes?

Meredith and Nick are not the only ones potentially finding love this season on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Flood told Entertainment Weekly that he can’t say much about what’s coming next. But, he admits that it’s pretty clear McWidow and Meredith have “a strong connection, a strong flirtation.” But, the pandemic and Meredith’s COVID storyline got in the way. Which made it “impossible” to explore the relationship further.

“This season there’s a lot of story to tell, so we had to move it on. But these are adult relationships and they’re complicated and timing is often very tricky, very difficult. And these characters are always being pulled in so many different directions,” Flood said.

“There will always be obstacles in the way. And then new characters are introduced, such as Megan (Abigail Spencer) comes in, and perhaps there may be a spark there. I mean, it all just depends on where they want the story to go. So I don’t know, it could build in many different directions.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday nights on ABC.
