Exciting things are happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and one of those things is the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. For years James Gunn has provided entertainment to Marvel fans everywhere with his direction on Guardians of the Galaxy. Although Vol. 3 of the franchise is likely to mark the end of his involvement in Marvel films, fans have the Holiday Special to look forward to. The project is scheduled to arrive at Disney+ in 2022, and fans are already hyped up.

Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige announced that the studio is working on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special during the Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day in 2020. Feige also confirmed that the project would be under the writing and direction of Gunn, who has worked with Marvel on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise before.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special would be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first live-action holiday production which sources reveal that Gunn had endlessly pitched to the studio before. The main cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy is set to reprise their roles in the Holiday Special.

The production includes Chris Pratt playing Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Vin Diesel playing Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, and Dave Bautista playing Drax. The Holiday Special will take place in between the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and Avengers: Endgame but before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Fans will have to watch the Holiday Special first

In an interview with Collider, Gunn said that fans should watch the Disney+ Holiday Special before watching Vol 3 as it will help fill out some of the missing plot points. He said, “it’s in-canon, it’s about the Guardians, you’re going to learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great.”

This perhaps explains why the Holiday Special is slated for a December 2022 Disney+ holiday season release ahead of Vol. 3’s May 2023 release date. Gunn also chose to have the Holiday Special air in under 40 minutes instead of a full-length film. The director confirmed that the cast would film the Holiday Special and Vol. 3 simultaneously as they will all be conveniently in one place, noting that the editing would have to be completed sooner.

The Holiday Special has fans excited

Ever since the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was announced, fans have been hyped up and can’t wait to watch it. Fans on Reddit even compared the special to the Star Wars Holiday Special, with one fan saying, “it’s a parody/ homage to Star Wars Holiday Special.”

Another user said, “it’s a homage/ tribute/ reference to the notoriously awful Star Wars Holiday Special. The SWHS has this cult status as being kind of a trial by fire for diehard fans. It’s not enjoyable in any sense of the word.”

The user went on to explain that “this will be the first D+ content directed by one of the filmmakers. Not meant as a knock against the other D+ shows, but as opposed to bringing over one or two actors from the films, the Holiday Special appears to be bringing over the entire cast with their director, which is a big deal.
