Today marks the first Monday in May. For non-fashion folks, that means celebrities will be putting on their best outfits in honor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual benefit for the Costume Institute, commonly referred to as the Met Gala or the Met Ball. They will be walking the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to see the latest exhibition inspired by this year’s theme. But the night that the fashion world looks forward to all year isn’t beloved by all. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has hated on the Met Gala in the past. Keep reading to learn what the actress has said about fashion’s biggest night of the year.

Gwyneth Paltrow first attended the Met Gala in 1995

Oscar-winning actress, Paltrow, first attended the Met Gala in 1995, according to the New York Post, four years before she won an Academy Award for her performance in Shakespeare in Love.

Paltrow called Met Gala ‘un-fun’ in now infamous interview

In a now infamous interview with USA Today, Paltrow said she’d never again go to the Met Gala. “I’m never going again,” Paltrow told hosts of the Australian radio show, The Kyle and Jackie O Show, just days after the event in 2013, according to E! News. She didn’t mince words when she said, “It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.”

Paltrow attended the 2013 Met Gala wearing a long-sleeve, hot pink Valentino gown. Maybe the sleeve length contributed to Paltrow being miserably hot and “boiling” at the event in May 2013? After all, New York City’s weather in early May can be hit or miss.

She did damage control on Goop

After the interview, E! News pointed out that Paltrow seemed to be doing damage control in the form of a post on her lifestyle site, Goop. Paltrow gave a positive account of the Met Gala itself.

“The Met Ball, at NYC’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, is always the year’s most elaborate display of incredible fashion and this year was no different,” Paltrow wrote. “The theme was ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ and when the house of Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri asked me to join them, I was thrilled to see what they would create with my right fashion hand, Elizabeth Saltzman.”

She continued, saying that everyone at the Goop office “got all inspired” by the punk theme, even though she previously told the radio hosts, “I think we’re all a bit too old to dress up punk.”

Paltrow returned to the Met Gala in 2017

Returning to the Met Gala in 2017, Paltrow stunned in a baby pink, figure-hugging one shoulder gown. Paltrow may have earned the forgiveness of Anna Wintour, the chair of the gala and the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, who determines the guest list herself.

Will Paltrow attend the Met Gala this year?

The Goop founder has been spotted in New York City ahead of the Met Gala tonight. Paltrow may not have wanted to pass up the chance to embrace this year’s theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion, taken from Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on ‘Camp.’”
