The British royal family has had a number of scandals over the years but none like the one involving Queen Elizabeth’s second-oldest son, Prince Andrew. Sarah Ferguson’s toe-sucking scandal and Prince Charles and Camilla’s “tampongate” may have been embarrassing for The Firm but what Andrew’s accused of is illegal.

In November 2019, the Duke of York decided to address his relationship with late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and the serious allegations that he had sex with one of Epstein’s alleged victims when she was a minor. But by speaking out on television Andrew only made things worse. Even though he resigned from all royal duties shortly after the interview aired, some have wondered if this scandal is one that has ruined his family’s reputation forever.

Here’s more on that and what Prince Charles will reportedly do when he’s king to try and salvage the monarchy.

The fallout after Prince Andrew’s disastrous interview

Prince Andrew’s appearance on BBC Newsnight in which he talked about his friendship with Epstein and denied the accusations against him has been referred to as his “car crash” interview. He did not come off as believable when he said things like “I have a peculiar medical condition which is that I don’t sweat” or when he recalled that he was “at a Pizza Express” on that exact night 20 years ago.

Not only that but the prince never expressed any sympathy for Epstein’s alleged victims.

The fallout was almost immediate as several organizations began distancing themselves from the duke, leaving him no choice but to step down. His actions damaged the royal family’s reputation in a way they had never dealt with before. And the fact that law enforcement officials have continually stated that Andrew is not cooperating with authorities means that things could get worse for him in the future.

Will Prince Charles kick his brother out of The Firm when he’s king?

One person who will be the monarch someday doesn’t want all the bad press that’s surrounding the family now to continue. That’s why Prince Charles reportedly wants to salvage his family’s image with some drastic measures by “slimming down the monarchy.”

Andrew and Charles never really had the best relationship over the years with their feuds and reported jealousy, so the possibility of Andrew ever working for the royal family again is highly doubtful.

Deputy editor of Royal Central Brittani Barger told the Daily Star Online, “I think it goes without saying that the Duke of York will never be added back as a working royal.”

So when his brother’s reign begins, Andrew almost certainly won’t have any role within the family and that may be one way for Charles to try and repair the family’s reputation.
