‘Hawkeye’: An Eagle-Eyed Marvel Fan Caught 1 Inconsistency Between the Disney+ Show and ‘Avengers’

Marvel’s fourth Disney+ show premiered on Nov. 24, and Hawkeye is already revisiting the events of previous Avengers movies. Not only does the premiere take fans all the way back to Phase One, but the series strives to address Clint Barton’s (Jeremy Renner) stint as Ronin in Avengers: Endgame. With so many callbacks to previous installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, keeping things consistent probably proved a challenge during production. And one eagle-eyed viewer has already pointed out a minor inconsistency in the premiere of Marvel’s Hawkeye show.

Hawkeye swept in with a two-episode premiere just ahead of Thanksgiving weekend, and the show opened with a familiar scene. Episode 1 shows Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) as a young girl living in New York City, offering her perspective of Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) attack during Avengers. It proved a traumatic experience for her character, as well as a catalyst. As it turns out, the movie’s main battle — and Clint’s part in it — inspired Kate to pick up a bow and arrow.

And despite viewing things from a new pair of eyes, fans get to experience the destruction of Avengers all over again in Hawkeye. Revisiting the battle brought back memories for many of the franchise’s followers. It also highlighted inconsistencies for some of them.

Following the premiere of Marvel’s Hawkeye, one fan took to Reddit to point out an inconsistency between the show and 2012’s Avengers. Both iterations of the Battle of New York highlight the damage done to Stark Tower. However, as one Redditor pointed out (via ComicBook.com), different letters are falling off the building in the two takes.

In Avengers, the “K” in “Stark” is broken and dangling from the tower, seemingly about to topple. Hawkeye remembers that a letter is supposed to be missing, but the “K” remains in place. Instead, the Disney+ series leaves the “R” missing.

It’s a minor detail that most viewers wouldn’t think twice about. But the fact that anyone caught it proves how committed Marvel fans are to the continuity between the franchise’s shows and films.

The ‘Hawkeye’ crew had to carefully recreate the set for the show

Despite the small continuity error, the crew working on Hawkeye went to great lengths to properly recreate the Avengers battle for the show. During an interview with The Wrap, director Rhys Thomas recounted the experience of replicating the set. It required vigilance, as well as doubling up on certain shots:

“The whole thing was completely done brand new, it was all new off the showroom floor, except there was one moment of Jeremy leaping off the building that we [used]. But we also had to shoot the other side. So we had our double recreate the leap as well. I had this great chance to look at dailies from the original Avengers, which was kind of cool.”

Of course, Thomas had other examples to look to. Avengers: Endgame needed to bring viewers back to the Battle of New York, as did Marvel’s previous Disney+ series, Loki. Despite Avengers hitting theaters nearly a decade ago, it continues to be a key addition to the MCU. It ties directly into Hawkeye and Loki — and they may not be the last series to call back to it either.

Hawkeye is now streaming on Disney+.
