Mirren was born on July 26, 1945, in Chiswick, London, England. Her parents, Russian Vasiliy Petrovich Mironoff and Scottish Kathleen Rogers had very interesting connections. Her father had played the viola with the London Philharmonic at one time, and would later go on to work for the Ministry of Transport. Mirren’s mother was the daughter of a butcher who provided the meat for Queen Victoria herself. Mirren was just a child when her father decided to change the family name.

Mirren found her way to the stage at just 13 in a production of Hamlet. She attended St. Bernard’s High School in Southend-on-Sea. She went on to audition for the National Youth Theatre at the tender age of 18 and got in. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company just a year later. Her future was fully ahead of her, but her mother steered her to go to college for teaching, which seemed like a more stable profession for the young woman at the time.

By the age of 20 she was involved in numerous stage productions. She played Cressida in Troilus and Cressida and Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra. She would go on to transition into films. Her breakout role came in the form of a television spot on Prime Suspect in 1992 as Detective Jane Tennison.

Mirren has been married to her longtime husband and partner, Taylor Hackford for many years. They met and were together for 11 years before tying the knot in 1997. She told People that it’s important to give your partner adequate space, which is the key to a happy partnership. “The thing is to allow the other person freedom to do what they want to do, which is so important,” Mirren says. “Let them do it. Encourage them and support them and vice versa.”

Mirren and her husband have an unconventional relationship. Mirren herself doesn’t have any biological children, but she does have two stepchildren through her marriage. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Mirren revealed that before watching a certain movie, she had never questioned not having children.

“I have never had a moment of regret about not having children,” Mirren says. “Well, I lie. When I watched the movie, Parenthood, I sobbed for about 20 minutes.” The movie made Mirren think about how parenting changes a person and the course of their future. “I sobbed for the loss of that and the fact that I never experienced it,” she explains.
