The latest season of American Crime Story takes audiences back to the late ’90s. The Emmy-winning anthology series will depict the events of the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal. Take a look at the first trailer from the season to learn more about when it premieres. Plus, who’s playing Hillary Clinton in the show?

The first trailer for ‘Impeachment: American Crime Story’ is here

The third season of American Crime Story takes place in the ’90s. It depicts the events that unfolded when Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) worked for Bill Clinton’s administration. Monica confides in her co-worker Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson) about her affair with the then-president (played by Clive Owen).

In August 2021, the first trailer for the FX series premiered. In it, the focus is primarily on the tapes Linda recorded of Monica sharing her secrets and how the story spun out from there, leading to the president’s impeachment. The season is based on the book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Brought Down a President by Jeffrey Toobin.

Additionally, Lewinsky herself receives credit as an executive producer, “People have been co-opting and telling my part in this story for decades,” she told Vanity Fair in 2019. “I’m so grateful for the growth we’ve made as a society that allows people like me who have been historically silenced to finally reintroduce my voice to the conversation.”

Edie Falco portrays Hillary Clinton in the FX miniseries

Though she doesn’t receive much screen time in the trailer, Edie Falco appears as Hillary Clinton in the miniseries. The Emmy-winning actor is known for series such as The SopranosNurse Jackie, and Oz. She also starred in the short-lived CBS procedural Tommy in 2020.

While her husband left public office after his second term as president ended in 2001, Hillary Clinton became a senator and then secretary of state. She also ran for president in 2008 and again in 2016. However, she generally refrained from speaking about the very public scandal that brought her so much attention.

In 2018, Clinton denied playing a part in shaming Lewinsky post-scandal, telling CBS Sunday Morning, “I take responsibility for my life and my actions.” She disagrees with those who called her husband’s actions “an abuse of power,” saying Lewinsky “was an adult” at the time.

When does ‘Impeachment: American Crime Story’ premiere?

Falco, Owen, Feldstein, and Paulson are joined by Margo Martindale, Judith Light, Colin Hanks, and many more in Impeachment: American Crime Story. Additionally, Cobie Smulders portrays Anne Coulter, who advised Paula Jones (Annaleigh Ashford) in her cast against the president. And Billy Eichner plays Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report, the first outlet to report on the scandal.

Though initially set for a September 2020 premiere, Impeachment: American Crime Story was delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Filming began later that year. The miniseries’ first episode premieres on FX on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, with new episodes each week following.
