The ‘House Party’ phenomenon

House Party appealed to comedy lovers and music enthusiasts alike. Christopher ‘Kid’ Reid and Christopher ‘Play’ Martin, better known as Kid ‘n Play, co-headlined the feature film. They had already vaulted to fame after their debut album, 2 Hype in 1988, and their sophomore installment, Kid ‘n Play Funhouse in 1990.

The charismatic musical pair earned fans with their catchy lyrics, likable personalities, and signature dance moves, including the Funky Charleston. In a genius move, they leveraged their popularity to become movie stars.

In House Party, Play’s parents go out of town, leaving him the run of the house. Predictably, the suave and popular teen throws a killer blowout with music, food, and plenty of partiers. Kid, who is grounded, sneaks out of the house to attend the shindig, and hilarity ensues. Along with Reid and Martin, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Martin Lawrence, and A.J. Johnson brought the comedy to life.

From the quotable lines to the epic rap battle to the inimitable dance-off, House Party became an instant hit with critics and fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned a favorable Audience Score of 82%, plus it scored a whopping 95% on the Tomatometer.

Box office gold

House Party spawned four sequels, in which Reid and Martin returned for three. And according to Deadline, “Old Town Road” music video director, Calmatic, will direct a reboot of House Party, with LeBron James producing.

The House Party legacy lives on today, and the original cast continues to work in entertainment. In the 30 years since the film premiered, here’s how much wealth the stars have maintained, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
