‘How I Met Your Mother’: Cobie Smulders Speaks on Spin-Off for the CBS Sitcom
How I Met Your Mother was a huge part of Cobie Smulders’ acting career. The actor started the TV show when she was just 23 years old, and it lasted for nine seasons. While Smulders has gone on to act in other projects since How I Met Your Mother, including The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and A Series of Unfortunate Events, she weighed in on her thoughts about a potential HIMYM spinoff.

Who did Cobie Smulders play in ‘How I Met Your Mother’
For nine seasons, Smulders portrayed the role of Robin Scherbatsky in the CBS sitcom. Robin is a character that is introduced into the main friend group by going on a date with Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) in the first episode.
While the two didn’t work out initially due to Robin’s commitment-phobic nature, the broadcast journalist becomes a huge part of Ted’s life. She becomes immersed into the friend group, becoming best friends with Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan) and dating Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris).
Robin’s character deals with tough issues throughout the show. She tries to earn her father’s approval and also learns that she is infertile. Robin learns to have a healthy attitude toward commitment while strengthening her relationships.
How her character ended up on ‘How I Met Your Mother’
After years of having and then not having feelings for Ted, Robin finally realizes her deep feelings for him. She does marry Barney first, and the two are married for three years. However, Robin grows distant from the group after she and Barney divorce and she knows her true feelings for Ted.
The final episode shows Ted returning to Robin, paralleling the pilot episode of the show. Ted and Robin’s journey after that is not shown for fans — as the show’s premise is finally concluded and explained.
But some fans want more and wonder where Robin and Ted and the rest of the gang could go on from the final episode of How I Met Your Mother.
What Cobie Smulders thinks of a potential spinoff ‘HIMYM’ show
There have been multiple reports about a potential How I Met Your Mother spinoff. The first, in 2014, which would have starred Greta Gerwig and Meg Ryan, didn’t ever get picked up, per Vanity Fair. But This Is Us writers Isaac Aptaker and Elizbeth Berger tried to give the spinoff another shot with How I Met Your Father in December 2016, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The 2016 version of the spinoff show that was in development at the time would tell the story of how a mother met her kids’ father from her perspective. The show would include a new cast as well.
But for a HIMYM spinoff that would include the original cast?
Smulders spoke with Metro.Co.Uk in May 2020 and revealed what she thought of a How I Met Your Mother spinoff show.
“There’s certainly nothing in the works for it, but I would love to work with everybody again,” Smulders said. “It’s been too long but there’s nothing on the horizon.”
