The holidays can be full of cheer, but January tends to be bleaker in comparison once all of the holiday decorations come down. So how do you fill your home with something that will bring joy once you’re done cleaning up? Joanna Gaines wrote about just that in her new blog post on Magnolia. Find out how she starts fresh in her home after the holidays.

Joanna Gaines said after taking down holiday decorations the home can be bare

The mother definitely likes to get into the Christmas spirit with her family. That involves many decorations and traditions. But Joanna Gaines revealed on her blog what she does once the season is all over.

“When the gifts have been opened, the tree has been taken down and Christmas has passed, I start to crave simplicity and fresh inspiration in my home,” she wrote. “There’s a moment every year after the decorations have been packed away where the house feels a little bare, but I like to look at this as my opportunity to approach our home with fresh eyes.”

She tries to refresh the home through all the senses using candles, music and decluttering

Joanna Gaines refreshes her home in very simple ways. “For me, the tools for this reset begin with the senses—sounds, smells, colors and textures,” she wrote. “I love to put a good playlist on shuffle, burn a new candle and start looking for the places in my home where I can clear clutter, incorporate new colors and add life.”

Their home recently had to change because of baby Crew

Over the holidays, Gaines also wrote about how the year was different from previous ones because of her new son, Crew. It turns out, some of the decorations the family had to take down were put in new places because of the new nursery.

“Truthfully, I was nervous the kids might be sad that things would look a little different this year,” Gaines wrote. “I even asked them if we should combine the two trees into one for next year, but they all said they love it just the way it turned out. I love how Crew has given us all fresh eyes to see the wonder in our yearly traditions.”

So the family had a fun time despite the changes. The mother wrote a look back on 2018 in another blog post and mentioned changes given the family announced the end of their show, had a new baby, and released several new projects.

As I sit here and reflect on 2018, I can see how the past twelve months could very well look like the opposite of rest to a lot of people,” she wrote. “But the change in rhythm that Crew has brought to our family, and the margin we created in order to identify what things we are most passionate about ended up giving us the rest and re-envisioning that we were looking for.” Hopefully refreshing the home will lead to Gaines coming up with new exciting projects in 2019.
