Before the Die Hard movie franchise sealed Bruce Willis’ fate as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, he was already enjoying success as a talented actor. His five-year run on the television series, Moonlighting, won Willis accolades and made him a household name.

While at the screening of Stakeout in 1987, Willis embarked on another life-altering course. It’s there that he met his first wife, Demi Moore. The instant attraction ignited in August led to marriage by November of the same year. Although they’re marriage ended in divorce in 2000, they continue to work together to create a cohesive environment for their children.

The relationship between Willis and Moore appeared solid from the beginning. Their first daughter, Rumer, was born August 16, 1988. The birth of their second daughter, Scout, followed on July 20, 1991. Their third and final child, Tallulah, was born on February 3, 1994.

Special care was taken from the outset of the Willis’ burgeoning family to create as normal a home environment as possible. With both parents such high-profile celebrities, they decided to raise their daughters in Hailey, Idaho, out of the Hollywood spotlight.

The Willis’ 24-year-old daughter, Tallulah, posted a recent Instagram photo taken with her parents that celebrated both the 30th birthday of her oldest sister, Rumer and Comedy Central’s Roast in honor of her dad. They were also joined by 27-year-old Scout.

The bond their parents share and maintain was attested to by Rumer in an interview on Larry King Now. She stated how impressed she was with the way her parents handled their separation and ultimate divorce. In the end, Willis and Moore put their family first and continued to create a single unit rather than two families split apart.

According to a 2009 interview given by the couple for W Magazine, Willis was firmly committed to single life by the time he met Heming at the gym of their mutual trainer in 2005. Although he was instantly attracted to her, she was engaged to another. It wouldn’t be until a chance encounter in 2007, when both were free to date, that they finally ignited that kindling.

Married since 2009, the Willis’ family has expanded to include 6-year-old daughter, Mabel Ray, born in April of 2012 and 4-year-old, Evelyn Penn, born in May 2014. It’s a full life, at least a life in which they “thrive off the chaos,” admitted Heming-Willis during a photo shoot of their Bedford, New York, home for Elle Décor.

For all the effort this action film star has spent amping up his on-screen machismo, Willis is the consummate family man. Heming-Willis continued lightheartedly that his mother trained him well in sharing household chores. On a more serious note, she paid tribute to his innate sense of generosity: “I think he’s been so used to having kids for so long, and knowing his time really isn’t his own anymore, that he’s very generous with it.”

Bruce Willis, the family man

Although Willis quipped during the Elle photo shoot that he’d made his home office as uninteresting as possible so he’d have some alone time, his actions tell a different story. He has invested in a life that puts family first. He maintains responsibility for making a comfortable home life for them – a place where they feel they’re the priority. He modestly confesses that he “doesn’t mind being surrounded by a big gang of females,” in a 2016 interview for People.
