Tupac’s name was changed when he was a year old

The superstar rapper who was known to the world was Tupac Shakur was actually born Lesane Parish Crooks.

His mother, Afeni Shakur, was a member of the Black Panther Party and had been serving time in jail for terrorism charges when she was pregnant with her first child. While awaiting bail, Afeni fought her case and was acquitted in May 1971. She welcomed her son a month later on June 16, 1971. When he was just a year old Afeni decided to legally change his name from Lesane Crooks to Tupac Amaru Shakur after Peruvian revolutionary Túpac Amaru II.

“I wanted him to have the name of revolutionary, indigenous people in the world,” Afeni once said about the name change. “I wanted him to know he was part of a world culture and not just from a neighborhood.”

The “Dear Mama” hitmaker’s father is Billy Garland. Tupac is the only child Afeni and Garland had together. Pac had very little contact with Garland growing up as he was raised by his mom and lived with her only other child his half-sister, Sekyiwa Shakur. Sekyiwa was born in 1975 and her father is Mutulu Shakur. Following her brother’s death, Sekyiwa started the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in his memory.

Tupac did have a few step-siblings too as Mutulu had four other children: Mopreme Shakur, Chinua Shakur, Nzingha Shakur, and Ayize Shakur.

In 1988, Mutulu was sentenced to 60 years behind bars for the RICO conspiracy, armed bank robbery, and bank robbery killings, according to The Sun.

There’s been some confusion over the years about whether Tupac had a wife. Well, the “Keep Ya Head Up” rapper was married the year before his death. On April 29, 1995, while serving time at the Clinton Correctional Facility on a sex abuse conviction, Tupac married Keisha Morris. The two met at a nightclub in 1994 when she was 20 years old.

“We were dancing, and we spoke briefly. He was going through something legally at the time, and I told him to just be careful of the people he’s around and that I hope everything works out,” Morris previously told XXL magazine. “I saw him a month later at the Tunnel [another nightclub], and he remembered the whole conversation…He gave me his number, and I gave him my house number. The next day, I had to go work…and he called me when I got home. We started talking from that day on.”

Their marriage was annulled in October 1995 when Tupac was released from prison. While they did not have any kids together, Morris later had two children but she has not remarried.

Tupac died on Sept. 13, 1996, after being shot while sitting in a vehicle at a red light on a street in Las Vegas six days earlier. He was 25 years old. His mom, Afeni, died on May 2, 2016, following a heart attack.
