It’s always easy to lose track of which Kardashian was married to whom and how many times they were married. We’re just happy Kim Kardashian seems to have finally found a husband she’ll stick with for (maybe) the rest of her life.

Yet, she’s been married before if your memory is short. Considering those marriages were disastrous, it’s a miracle she hit the jackpot with Kanye West. Not that we can necessarily predict the future of this marriage either, especially with Kim deciding to study law.

Take a few minutes to look back to her previous relationships and what went wrong with them as a somewhat educational guide.

The stereotypical 19-year-old Hollywood socialite

Everything that some people still think Kim Kardashian represents today was packed into her 19-year-old self in the late 1990s. A few years after experiencing the trauma of her lawyer dad (Robert Kardashian) representing O.J. Simpson’s legal team, Kim was trying to navigate the pitfalls of living in Hollywood.

Being 19 and trying to find your own identity isn’t easy after growing up in a privileged family. Being a Hollywood socialite at the time also opened doors to potentially bad relationships. When drugs are involved, it becomes a doubly bad situation.

Kim’s first marriage was an elopement with music producer Damon Thomas. This was almost 20 years ago, so it may be a distant memory even to Kardashian fans.

At the time of the wedding to Thomas, she recently said she was high on Ecstasy and didn’t really comprehend the reality of what was going on.

The Thomas marriage ends in disaster, then dating for eight years

Damon Thomas was a music producer of renown, but he and Kim could hardly get along. He claimed she was a compulsive shopper, and she claimed he was abusive in more ways than one.

Their marriage ended in 2003, allowing Kim to date for a number of years before becoming serious with anyone else. Eventually she did, despite having yet another horrific marriage.

Between 2003 and 2011, she dated everyone from Nick Lachey to NFL players like Reggie Bush. In-between this time, most people remember her relationship with Ray J and the infamous sex tape.

Kardashian will never be able to remove this tarnished moment from her life. Nevertheless, she didn’t let it deter her from finally getting serious with someone.

The Kris Humphries debacle

The marriage of Kim Kardashian and NBA star Kris Humphries was arguably a primer on what not to do when deciding on a celebrity marriage. They’d only dated six months before plunging headfirst into a marriage.

We all remember it was also one of the shortest Hollywood marriages in history at only 72 days. What made it worse was it became a part of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, including an elaborate TV special E! put together for their marriage ceremony.

Blending reality show life with (supposedly) real life was a major warning tale for reality show stars. While Kim claims it wasn’t a publicity stunt, the good news is she happened to find Kanye West and start dating him before she could even file for divorce from Humphries.

Can the Kim-Kanye marriage last a lifetime?

On May 24 this year, Kim and Kanye will have been married five years. After several children (and maybe more through a surrogate), it seems they were truly meant for each other. In the beginning, nobody would have thought so.

With Kim now studying law and going in different directions, you have to wonder what Kanye thinks of it all. They even seem like a somewhat politically mixed couple as well, no matter if Kim seems more ambiguous in her political beliefs.

You can still find a few marriages in Hollywood that have endured this long, plus much longer. As Kim improves her intellectual capabilities, she’ll be able to bring more smarts to her marriage, something Kanye obviously finds attractive. If their marriage ever fails, at least she won’t be the somewhat lost 19-year-old she once was.
