Her name is recognizable to generations of people everywhere, but here are some facts you might not know about Cher.

How old is Cher?

Cher was born on May 20, 1946, which means that she is turning 73 in 2019.

Cher’s birth name is actually Cherilyn Sarkisian. Her father was an Armenian-American truck driver and her mother was a model and actress. Cher grew up in Southern California and started being involved in school productions at a young age.

When she was 16 years old, Cher dropped out of school and went to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment. Here, she met musician Sonny Bono and the two of them started a duo together. In the 1960s and early 1970s, Sonny & Cher became famous for entertaining the public with their music and variety TV show.

Sonny & Cher broke up in 1975 when Cher was in her late 20s. She went on to release solo music while also cultivate an acting career. She would spend the next several decades becoming a household name all over the world and earning countless awards along the way.

How many times has Cher been married?

Cher has been married twice.

Her first marriage was to Sonny Bono, who was more than 10 years older than her. Cher was around 18 when they got married in 1964, and unsurprisingly, the couple developed marital problems after a period of time. They divorced in 1975.

Just four days after her divorce from Sonny Bono, though, Cher went on to marry Gregg Allman, one of the members of The Allman Brothers Band. They began to have problems early on due to his drug addiction, but the marriage continued on until 1979 when Cher and Allman officially divorced.

Throughout her life, Cher has also been known for dating quite a few famous men in Hollywood, such as Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Richie Sambora. However, she has not married anyone else since her divorce with Gregg Allman.

How many kids does Cher have?

Cher has two children from her two marriages.

Cher and Sonny’s child is a son named Chaz Bono, who was born in 1969. For most of his life, Chaz was known as Chastity Bono, but in 2008, it was reported that Chastity was undergoing gender transition from female to male and would now be known as Chaz.

In recent years, Chaz Bono has done a few acting work in shows such as The Bold and the Beautiful as well as American Horror Story.

During her marriage to Gregg Allman, Cher gave birth to another son named Elijah Blue Allman. He was born in 1976. Elijah Allman is a musician under the stage name P. Exeter Blue. He has worked as a guitarist for Cher as well as with bands such as Thirty Seconds to Mars and Sugar Ray.

Chaz Bono and Elijah Allman were close when they were younger, though they reportedly grew apart as they got older.

“I think what happened was Chaz went off to a performing arts school back east and I went off back east as well, later to prep school, and so from there we kind of took different paths,” Elijah Allman once said. “But for a minute growing up we were kind of close… We kind of grew apart when we started going to different schools and just not being geographically around each other.”

Cher also sent Elijah to a boarding school when he was a kid because his father had drug problems and she did not want him to grow up in that environment. Elijah, however, felt like he was being “shunned” and, as a result, developed a complicated relationship with his mother.

When he eloped with his girlfriend in 2013, Cher reportedly was not happy and the two of them ended up not being on speaking terms with one another. However, their relationship has since been mended.

It’s clear that their family has lots of ups and downs, but Cher seems to love being a mother to Chaz and Elijah. “I’ve got children that are absolutely the best thing in the world,” she once shared.
