When they met, the “Resentment” singer already had a beau, and she was beginning to plot her solo career, so she and the rapper did not officially begin dating until 2001.

In a 2008 interview with Seventeen — a typically reserved Beyoncé revealed, “I was 18 when we first met, 19 when we first started dating.” However, their relationship didn’t exactly begin on the right foot. On his 2017 album 4:44 –the Brooklyn born rapper got candid about how he completed flubbed his first date with his first wife. He even brought a friend with him to dinner.

The power couple didn’t officially become exclusive until Beyoncé’s 21st birthday on Sept. 4, 2002. It was not a romantic affair. Beyoncé and JAY-Z tied the not on April 4, 2008, after seven years of dating on and off. The pair wed in New York City in the rapper’s Tribeca apartment and instead of exchanging rings, they got matching IV tattoos on their ring fingers.
Later that year, Bey revealed why she and JAY- Z choose to keep their relationship private. She told Essence Magazine, “We decide everything. My word is my word. What Jay and I have is real. It’s not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It’s real.”
