ABC’s hit legal drama, How to Get Away with Murder, is back for the sixth and final season, and we are missing yet another one of the original Keating Five. Annalise Keating’s (Viola Davis) five original chosen law students are Wes Gibbons (Alfred Enoch), Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza), Asher Millstone (Matt McGory), Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) and Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee).

Wes died half-way through the third season, and now Laurel and her baby, Christopher are mysteriously gone, too.

Souza quietly left ‘How to Get Away with Murder’

In the season 5 finale, Laurel and Christopher went missing. Annalise and Laurel’s other friends assume that the Castillos took her and the baby. When the series returned in late September, Laurel was still gone, and we were not any closer to finding out where she went.

Souza’s name was also missing from the opening credits of the show. When we looked further, we found that sources have confirmed to TVLine that Souza will not be returning as a series regular for the final season.

Showrunner Peter Norwalk recently told TVLine that Laurel’s disappearance is one of “the biggest mysteries of this season.” He also would like fans to know, “We’ll try to be giving you answers as quickly as possible [as to] where Laurel and [son] Christopher are…”

Souza will likely make at least a few guest appearances on the show so that her storyline can be wrapped up before the show concludes.

What do we know so far about where Laurel might be?

Norwalk did elaborate regarding where Laurel could have gone, “Laurel’s done some shady things in the past, so the possibility of her disappearing herself is very real. Or, because her family is so crazy, they could have taken her. Or someone else could have taken her. All of these questions are on the characters’ minds and the audience’s mind, so we’ll be trying to provide them with clues as to what really happened.”

In a recent episode, Frank Delfino (Charlie Weber) coerced a taxi cab driver into telling him where exactly he took Laurel. When Frank went to the warehouse where she was dropped at, he was ambushed by Laurel’s brother, Xavier Castillo (Gerardo Celasco).

From the looks of Laurel getting into the taxi cab, its possible she went on her own accord. There was a crib set up at the warehouse, so it does seem that she was there with Christopher. The only disheartening thing is why her brother would brutally beat up Frank if Laurel left for her own reasons.

Although, it does sound like Souza left the show willingly, so maybe her character did, too.

Souza scored a role on another show

While no reason for Souza’s departure has been confirmed yet, it is possible that Souza left due to scheduling conflicts. She announced in late March, via Instagram that she will be starring in Amazon’s new FIFA drama, El Presidente.

The eight-part series will air on Amazon’s SVOD service in over 200 countries. Armando Bo will be directing and executive producing the show, which is based on the true story and events behind the 2015 FIFA Gate corruption scandal.

El Presidente will show the world, with loads of irony, how the most beloved sport of all is, in fact, a multimillionaire business run by a ridiculous mob we have never seen before: the Football Mafia,” Bo explained to Deadline.

While fans of Souza will be happy to see her in something else, we still hope she comes back to How to Get Away with Murder to wrap things up this season. You can catch new episodes Thursday nights at 10 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
