How did Wes die in season 3 of ‘How to Get Away with Murder?’

Before we get to the fan theories, it is essential to review what we know about the death of Wes during season 3 of How to Get Away with Murder

During the season 3 finale, Laurel’s brother, Dominic (Nicholas Gonzalez), shoots Wes in the neck with a syringe that makes him very weak. Wes knocks his attacker over the head with a bottle and then crawls slowly to the door. Just as he is about to get out of the house, Dominic tackles him and begins smothering him.

He holds his mouth and nose shut until Wes is unconscious and then drags his body to the basement. Later, we hear Dominic call Laurel’s father, Jorge Castillo (Esai Morales), to tell him that Wes is, in fact, dead.

The house goes up in flames with Wes, presumably in the basement, still. Viewers violently sobbed at home while watching the death of one of the most beloved characters on the show.

How could Wes possibly have escaped and be alive in season 6?

If you rewatch season 3, episode 15, you will notice that the Wes death scene looks very real. He is unconscious, so how does he escape?

“If it is complete (no air at all reaches the lungs), the lack of oxygen and excess of carbon dioxide in the blood will cause almost immediate loss of consciousness,” according to the Medical dictionary. “Though the heart continues to beat briefly, death will follow in a matter of minutes unless emergency measures are taken to get breathing started again.”

The medical dictionary notes that the heart continues to beat. If emergency measures such as CPR are preformed within minutes, the person will be revived. We can infer that someone resuscitated Wes and removed him from the house, for him to suddenly be back in the season 6 finale.

“Remember they never had a body for him,” wrote one Instagram user. Laurel was distraught that she could not see Wes’s body one last time, so she sneaks into the morgue, only to find a different body in Wes’ body bag.

Who helped Wes fake his death on ‘How to Get Away with Murder?’

Fans point to one particular person when contemplating who helped Wes escape death, and then cover it up—Annalise.

“I always thought Annalise’s reactions to mentions of Wes in the recent episodes were a bit too harsh,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “So, maybe that was all because she knew he was alive.”

During the Wes death scene, Annalise is telling ADA Todd Denver (Benito Martinez) how Wes killed Sam Keating (Tom Verica) and his girlfriend, Rebecca Sutter (Katie Findlay). She explains away all of the previous murders with one voicemail Wes left on Annalise’s phone that day. It sounds as if he commits suicide after the phone call. The way Annalise can easily explain everything makes it evident that she is the one covering for Wes.

At that point, we know it’s not Laurel who helped Wes escape. She is too distraught in the months following his death. Annalise, however, is excellent at lying, so we are not shocked that the professor is the one who knew Wes was still alive. She just needed him to take the fall for all of the deaths she and the ‘Keating 5’ committed.

“I knew Wes’ death was suspicious, and Laurel’s disappearance wasn’t sitting right,” added another Reddit user. “She went missing too fast and was definitely hiding something the whole time.”

Fans believe Annalise is the person who helped Wes fake his death, and now he is there at her funeral, which could also be for show. Find out the answers to all of your questions when the last six episodes of How to Get Away with Murder returns on April 2, 2020.
