Paramount+’s ‘iCarly’ follows the characters as adults

Nickelodeon’s iCarly, starring Miranda Cosgrove as Carly Shay, Nathan Kress as Freddie Benson, and Jennette McCurdy as Sam Puckett, premiered in 2007. The show followed Carly, Sam, and Freddie’s middle school adventures as hosts of their own famous web show, titled iCarly. These young teens navigated the entertainment business while also exploring romances and other personal endeavors.

Meanwhile, Paramount+’s iCarly focuses much less on the web show. Carly remains host to this day, but this serves as a minor plot point compared to other themes. For the most part, the iCarly reboot follows Carly’s love life as a 26-year-old.

Like Carly, Freddie has seen his fair share of relationship endings, including two divorces. The new iCarly also features Carly’s now-rich older brother Spencer (Jerry Trainor), plus Carly’s roommate Harper (Laci Mosley) and Freddie’s adopted step-daughter Millicent (Jaidyn Triplett).

According to the iCarly cast, the reboot was designed to be a show for the adults who grew up watching the Nickelodeon version.

“The whole point now is, this was a kids’ show before, but we are evolving so that the kids who watched it from 2007 to 2012 and are now nine years older, are able to enjoy an adult show in the same universe,” Kress said in an interview with Page Six.

The ‘iCarly’ reboot finale premieres on Aug. 26

iCarly premiered on Paramount+ on June 17 with a 13-episode schedule. New episodes have since launched every Thursday exclusively for subscribers. At the time of this writing, the series has aired 11 episodes. On Aug. 19, episode 12 will premiere, followed by the iCarly reboot finale on Aug. 26.

It’s not clear what the next two episodes will hold, but many fans on Reddit are hoping the tension between Carly and Freddie will build until one of them admits their feelings for the other in the finale.

“I imagine in these last few episodes we are gonna get more with Spencer and Harper’s cousin,” one fan wrote in a recent episode discussion. “I still wonder if we will see Freddie’s first ex-wife, and I am also calling my shot that by the final episode, we get Carly admitting to Harper that she does like Freddie in a romantic sense but makes Harper swear to keep it a secret. Very excited for these last few episodes.”

On July 15, Deadline reported that Paramount+ renewed iCarly for a second season. According to the report, iCarly has ranked as one of the streaming service’s most-streamed shows since its premiere.

It’s not been announced when the new season will air, but Deadline did reveal that “production will begin in Los Angeles this fall.” Hopefully, that means a release date in 2022. The second season will likely follow a similar episode schedule.
