Actress and singer (and former Disney darling) Debby Ryan has had an impressive career, given her young age. The second season of her latest series, Insatiable, will arrive on Netflix Friday. Here’s what she has to say about the controversy surrounding the show.

How Debby Ryan became famous

Ryan first began appearing on the Disney Channel as a child actress. She was in The Suite Life On Deck, in the movie 16 Wishes, and then got her own series, Jessie. Ryan starred as the eponymous teenager who becomes a nanny in New York City. The series ended in 2015.

One of the children in the family Jessie took care of was Luke, played by actor Cameron Boyce. Boyce, who also starred in the Disney Channel Descendants film series, passed away in July 2019 due to complications from epilepsy. Ryan posted her own tribute to Boyce on Instagram shortly after the news was made public, calling her former co-star “relentlessly joyful.”

She stars in ‘Insatiable’

In Season 1 of Insatiable, Ryan portrays the Patty Bladell, a high school student who loses a significant amount of weight after suffering an injury in which her jaw is wired shut for months. Patty quickly realizes that she’s getting a new kind of attention, and decides to use her newfound status to get back at those that wronged her in the past.

However, the premise of the show, which itself is decidedly satirical and points out the flaws in Patty’s way of thinking, was poorly received by many. Despite this, a second season was ordered, which will begin airing in full on Netflix on Oct. 11, 2019.

What Ryan thinks of the backlash surrounding ‘Insatiable’

When the show first came out, Ryan told Teen Vogue she was surprised by the criticism, saying of her perspective, “We knew that this conversation needed to be had. We knew that this societal brokenness needed to be addressed, but we didn’t know how badly it needed to be addressed,” she said.”

One of the biggest sticking points for many was that Ryan wore a fat suit in her early portrayal of Patty. However, the point was not for people to laugh at her, and the actress said that during her time in the costume she “was enraged” by those who stared at her saying she “learned what a slight percentage of Patty’s rage would feel like in that situation.”

Here’s what else she’s working on

Right now, according to her IMDb profile, Ryan isn’t working on any new films or TV shows. She filmed Season 2 of Insatiable earlier this year, and now, she seems to have other things to focus on, including her engagement to Josh Dun, the drummer for the band Twenty-One Pilots.

In addition to accompanying Dun on tour this summer, Ryan has attended various fashion events. She also has a number of paid partnerships that she posts for on Instagram, including Clean & Clear and L’Oreal.

Since she’s been working for so many years, Ryan has managed to accumulate quite a bit of wealth. According to Celebrity Net Worth, she’s worth an estimated $4 million. Given that she’s only in her mid-20s, we expect that number to grow significantly over the years as her career continues to prosper.
