The Issa Rae-created TV series Insecure is currently airing its final season on HBO. Over the past several years, fans have watched Issa (Issa Rae) and her best friend Molly (Yvonne Oriji). They’ve transitioned from their late 20s to their early 30s navigating their own friendship, romances and their careers.

Now as we prepare to say goodbye to Insecure for good, fans should begin to brace themselves for an extreme shift halfway through the season.

‘Insecure’ Season 5 has one central theme

Insecure has always revolved around themes as we’ve watched Issa and Molly deal with the triumphs and trials of adulthood. Season 5 has one central theme. Insecure showrunner Prentice Penny revealed on Twitter, “Are we gonna be okay is the theme of the entire season. You should watch it from that lens.”

From what we’ve seen so far, there are bound to be some bumps ahead, but we do think that our favs will be OK.

Something extreme will take place in the middle of the final season

Though season 5 of Insecure is only a couple of episodes in, there have already been some major surprises. There was a massive time jump that moved the characters further along in time. Moreover, fans can expect something extreme to happen in the middle of the season.

“We always know halfway through that there will be some sort of thrust to the second half of the season,” Penny told Buzzfeed. “In Season 1, Issa sleeps with Daniel — that made audiences say, ‘Oh snap, now the game is different.’ In Season 3, Issa meets Nathan and Lawrence returns. And last year in Season 4, Molly and Issa fight at the block party. There’s a midway push to the second half of the season — it’s almost like we’re building two arcs for our show.”

Fans will be sad to see the show end, but it will be quite the journey.

‘Insecure’ Season 5 Spoilers

‘Insecure’ fans can expect their favorite characters to be super bold and honest this season

As fans have watched Issa, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), Molly, Kelli (Natasha Rothwell), and Tiffany (Amanda Seals) stretch and expand over the past several years, they’ve had to deal with a lot. Fans have also realized that a lot of the turmoil in their lives has come when they weren’t honest with themselves or others.

Penny says that will all shift this season. “Nobody’s holding back anything, so let’s see where that gets them,” he told Buzzfeed. “We always viewed this season as the characters’ lives are not ending, it’s just that the writers and the audience won’t be watching them anymore. We never wanted to write an ending. We always wanted to write it like this is the next phase of their lives, and if you were to watch Season 6, these are the stories we would be telling in this world.”

As Kelli said, this season will be all about “growth.”
