Halle Berry is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood having appeared in more than 50 movies including Monsters Ball, Catwoman, Die Another Day, and the X-Men films. Today, she has a hefty net worth of $90 million and an impressive real estate portfolio. But things haven’t always been easy for the actor, in fact, before landing movie roles she lived in a homeless shelter. Here’s what she had to say about that, plus a look inside Berry’s Malibu beach house and Hollywood Hills homes.

Berry once lived in a homeless shelter

Before she became a household name, Berry lived in a homeless shelter in New York City.

“That was rough,” she previously told People about the experience. “Shelter life was part of figuring it out for a minute until I could get a waitressing job. Then I got a bartending job, and until I could figure that out, that’s what I did.”

But the Oscar-winner believes that staying there before her career took off helped shape her into the woman she is today.

Inside her stunning Malibu beach house

Berry purchased her Malibu home in 2004 for $8.5million. She moved into the house while her Hollywood Hills home was being renovated.

The beachfront property is 5,000 square feet with three bedrooms and five bathrooms. It’s an open floor plan that boasts floor-to-ceiling windows for great views of the Pacific Ocean.

Some of the other amenities the house offers include an elevator, a bar, a hot tub, private balconies off of the bedrooms, a spacious rooftop area, and private access to the beach.

The Hollywood Hills homes Berry has owned

Berry owns and has owned multiple homes in the Hollywood Hills but it’s unclear how many homes she still has there today.

We do know that back in 1994, when she was married to David Justice, Berry purchased a Mediterranean-style villa for $1.5 million. That residence was built in 1989 and has 4,315-square feet of living space with three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. The location in the Hills offers plenty of privacy and seclusion and boasts views of the city below. Outback there is a patio, a pool, a spa, and a private yard behind two-story walls of glass. The Los Angeles Times noted that Berry sold it in 2006 for $4.15 million.

The Swordfish star reportedly bought another place in the area off of fellow actor Frankie Muniz in 2005 for $6 million. The abode, originally built in the 1920s, was completely renovated to give it high ceilings and archways. The estate is about 5,000 square feet with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. There are also five fireplaces throughout the home. Elsewhere on the property, you’ll find a 1,400-foot guesthouse that has one bedroom and two bathrooms. Other amenities of this house include a media room, a large yard with a pool and spa, and two firepits made of lava rock.
