The Boys proved there was a demand for dark superhero stories, and Prime Video delivered on that all over again with its adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible. The animated series had an impressive debut in March 2021. Since then, fans have waited eagerly for another batch of episodes. Sadly, an update from Steven Yeun suggests it could be a while before Invincible Season 2 actually arrives.

Is ‘Invincible’ returning to Prime Video for season 2?

After the success of its first outing, Prime Video renewed Invincible for season 2 and season 3 almost immediately. Variety reported the news in April 2021 following an announcement on Twitter from creator Robert Kirkman.

Kirkman expressed gratitude for the opportunity to take the series further, emphasizing how great it was to see his work brought to life on-screen:

“The comic book is truly a love letter to a genre that Cory [Walker] and I grew up reading and loving, and it’s been a gratifying journey to watch our characters come to life again through the animated series. We’re beyond excited to continue this story for at least two more seasons.”

The confirmation of a second and third season gave fans hope that Prime Video would do Kirkman’s lengthy series justice. Naturally, they soon started wondering when they’d see the next outing.

Steven Yeun offers ‘Invincible’ production update

Although Invincible received its season 2 renewal nice and early, there’s been no word on when the next outing will arrive. Steven Yeun, who voices the title character, broke the silence during an interview with Collider. His update came with both good news and bad:

“We haven’t started. I know we’re starting at some point soon. I’ve talked to Robert [Kirkman], here and there. He’s super excited about it. He thinks season 2 is gonna be even better than season 1, which I have no doubt about. If you go to his source material, Invincible is an incredible comic, and just thinking about how much story hasn’t been told from that run, it’s gonna be bonkers. I’m really excited about it.”

The bad news, of course, is that work on season 2 hasn’t begun yet. However, Yeun’s optimism about the second outing’s quality makes it sound like it’ll be worth the wait.

So, knowing where production stands, when could fans see Invincible Season 2 premiere?

Considering Invincible Season 2 hasn’t started production yet, it seems unlikely fans will see it in 2022. The series probably won’t return until 2023 at the earliest — and that’s barring any delays or unforeseen obstacles.

Those hoping to return to Mark Grayson’s story sooner will have to check out the comics the show is based on. Of course, they can always rewatch the first season in the interim. Both endeavors will help fill the time until the animated series returns.

Invincible Season 1 is currently streaming on Prime Video.
