This presidential candidate has many proposals to tackle issues such as climate change. It led some supporters to wonder whether or not Bernie Sanders eats meat. Is Bernie Sanders a vegan or vegetarian? What has the senator said about factory farms and animal welfare? Hereā€™s what we know about Senator Bernie Sanders and his diet.

In the past, Senator Sanders condemned factory farms for their negative environmental impact

Senator Bernie Sanders is known for multiple political opinions. That includes ā€œMedicare for All,ā€ free public college, and the Green New Deal, a proposal that aims to address climate change and economic inequality. Some suggest people can reduce greenhouse gases and their individual impact on the environment by eating less meat. Even Senator Bernie Sanders commented on the negative effects of factory farms.

ā€œFactory farms are responsible for 1.4 trillion pounds of animal waste in America. They are a threat to the water we drink and the air we breathe, and it is unbelievable to me that Republicans in Congress have been working overtime to exempt factory farms from environmental laws,ā€ tweeted Senator Sanders. The post earned over 12,000 likes on Twitter, most of them from activists fighting against animal cruelty and climate change.

In the past, the senator received a perfect score from the Humane Society Legislative Fund. This led some supporters, particularly after one democratic party presidential debate, to wonder whether or not the senator follows a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Is Senator Bernie Sanders a vegetarian or a vegan?

Despite some speculation from vegans worldwide, Senator Bernie Sanders is neither vegan or vegetarian. According to the Washington Post, Bernie Sanders sticks to a diet that is predominately meat and vegetables. He does, however, continue to advocate for sustainable meat and against factory farms.

ā€œWe must end a system where the top 10 percent of farmers get 77 percent of subsidies from the USDA. Our job is to help family farmers who are struggling. Not to make billion-dollar corporations even richer,ā€ Bernie Sanders tweeted.

Despite the Senatorā€™s diet, some vegans and vegetarians rally behind this political candidate, even forming the Facebook group ā€œVegans for Bernie Sanders.ā€ Readers can learn more about Bernie Sanderā€™s lifestyle choices in his forewood for the book entitled Good Meat: The Complete Guide to Sourcing and Cooking Sustainable Meat.

Even though Senator Sanders eats meat, heā€™s sure to comment on the sustainability of the agriculture industry. The activist even wrote the foreword for Good Meat: The Complete Guide to Sourcing and Cooking Sustainable Meat.

ā€œIn my view, the challenge that we now face, in terms of food production, is to break up the dangerous concentration of ownership that exists in agriculture and the food industry, and do everything we can to protect and expand family-based organic and local food production,ā€ Bernie Sanders wrote.
