Is ‘Indian Matchmaking’ Star Aparna Shewakramani Still Single?
Netflix’s new series, Indian Matchmaking, follows matchmaker Sima Taparia (from Mumbai) as she helps singles find their soul mates. With her hilarious one-liners and no-nonsense attitude, Houston-based lawyer Aparna Shewakramani became the breakout star of the series. She didn’t end up engaged on the show, so viewers are naturally wondering if she’s still single.
‘Indian Matchmaking’ star Aparna Shewakramani isn’t going to settle
When Sima Taparia first meets Aparna on Indian Matchmaking, she has no idea what she’s getting into. The matchmaker usually meets her clients in person and asks them what they want in a match. But when her singles get too picky, Sima advises them to compromise a little.
But Aparna is not one to compromise, especially when it comes to finding her match. She doesn’t like men who like to relax or have a sense of humor. And if they don’t know that Bolivia has salt flats, that’s a deal-breaker too.
Aparna knows exactly what she wants, and she’s unwilling to settle for anything less. While some of her expectations may seem extreme, there’s one profound statement she makes that completely justifies her demands.
“You don’t pick your family,” Aparna says on the show. “Not your parents or your kids. The only family you can choose is your spouse — make that choice the best possible.”
Aparna made a connection with Jay
On Indian Matchmaking, after Aparna rejects a number of matches, Sima Aunty introduces her to Jay, a match from Atlanta. The two speak over Skype and eventually end up meeting in person. They immediately hit it off, and after Aparna introduces him to her friends, she says he has potential.
“I don’t hate him,” she says. “So, go Jay! You won the first hurdle, or passed the first hurdle, or jumped the first hurdle. I don’t know, there was a hurdle, he passed it.”
Jay also says he can see his relationship with Aparna moving forward. “I think there’s a possibility of a future with her,” he suggests. “I’d love to see her in Atlanta, and to actually see if that’s something she would enjoy, meeting my family, and things like that, so that would be a really cool next step.”
So is Aparna still single?
In an interview with Oprah Mag, Aparna revealed that she’s still a single woman. She remains good friends with Jay, as well as two of her other dates, Dilip and Shekhar.
“We’re actually good friends,” she said. “That’s a positive experience that came out of the show. To walk away with three people you can relate to, and who are good and kind and grounded, is a success in my book.”
When speaking to the outlet, Jay said that things didn’t work out with Aparna because of the distance. But he does think there’s still a chance for them.
“Now that the show is coming back, we’re talking much more frequently,” Jay said. “It’s like, who knows? There’s still hope. There wasn’t a clear reason why we stopped talking. It was more just that we lived in different cities. I’m not saying that this is going to happen—but from my perspective, it’s not off the table.”
