Caitriona Balfe has skyrocketed to fame as Outlander’s Claire Fraser. With four seasons under her belt, Balfe has grown accustomed to all the attention, but she still tends to keep her personal life out of the public eye. This is why fans were caught off guard when the Outlander star rocked what looked like an engagement ring on the red carpet at last year’s Golden Globes.

Balfe later confirmed that she is now engaged to her boyfriend, Tony McGill, whom she has been dating for over two years. While they have kept their relationship tightly under wraps, fans are still wondering if they have tied the knot over the past year.

The Outlander star opened up about her new engagement shortly after her Golden Globes appearance in 2018. According to Marie Claire, Balfe revealed that McGill popped the big question during the holidays. She also admitted that she is thrilled to be starting a new chapter with her partner, though she did not reveal if she had set a date for the wedding.

“It happened over the break,” Balfe shared. “I’m very happy.”

Fans hoped that Balfe would be more open about her romance after the engagement announcement, but she has remained fairly tight lipped about it all. A few weeks after the Golden Globes, Balfe and McGill enjoyed a stroll through the streets of Dublin, where the actress showed off her new ring. Other than that, the two have remained as elusive. While Balfe has not confirmed anything, insiders say she wanted to tie the knot in Italy.

What do we know about Balfe’s man?

Unfortunately, the internet has very little to offer when it comes to Balfe’s fiancé. We do know that he is Irish and met Balfe as early as 2015. It is unclear when the two started dating, but a video from 2015 shows the pair interacting at a house party.

Based on the clip, which features Balfe playing an Irish tune on the flute, it is pretty obvious that the two are in love. Exactly when they met and how, however, remains a mystery.

Balfe and McGill have made a few public appearances together. Their first public debut was at a ceremony on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The two showed up to celebrate the unveiling of Jodie Foster’s star, confirming their romance for all the world to see. They followed that up with appearances at the Oscar Wilde Awards in 2017 and the Golden Globes a year after that.

What about all those Sam Heughan rumors?

Ever since they appeared together on Outlander, and put their palpable chemistry on display, fans have been shipping Balfe and Heughan in real life. In fact, the topic has frequently come up in interviews, mostly before Balfe and McGill got engaged. While fans would love to see them together, Heughan and Balfe have shut down the romance rumors on multiple occasions.

In a recent interview, Balfe talked about how fans are starting to accept the fact that she and Heughan are just good friends. The actress admitted that the desire to see them together is a testament to their on-screen chemistry and a compliment to the show’s writers.

But now that she is engaged to McGill, Balfe feels like most fans understand that she and Heughan will never be a thing in real life.

So have Balfe and McGill exchanged vows already?

Until Balfe officially confirms it, there is no telling if she and McGill have already tied the knot. McGill, who works as a music producer in Ireland, rarely makes public appearances, which only complicates matters. Sources claim that the couple wanted to exchange vows somewhere in Italy, but nothing official has been announced.

Between filming and promotional tours, Balfe is also very busy with Outlander. With her schedule packed, Balfe would be hard pressed to squeeze in a wedding. Production for Season 5 of Outlander is currently underway in Scotland, so if a wedding is in the works, it will likely happen later this year.

Unless, of course, they have already walked down the aisle. Hopefully Balfe will make an announcement and give us an inside look at what we can only imagine will be a gorgeous ceremony.
