Fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia can’t watch the show without smiling when Charlie Day shows up on the small-screen. Playing the character of Charlie Kelly, he has a way of pulling people in and making them laugh with his zany antics and cunning charm.

Day credits his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, with keeping him grounded and supporting his career. They met in 2001 at a New York theater and several years later worked on Reno 911 together. In 2006, they married, and have been inseparable ever since.

The couple is now proud parents to their only son and has found a way to make family life in Hollywood fun. Ellis, who plays a large part in Day’s life, is also an integral part of the popular television series.

The talented Charlie Day

Day is a multi-talented guy. An accomplished actor, producer, writer, talented musician, and loving husband, he seems to have it all going for him.

He was nominated for a Best Actor Award by Critics’ Choice Television for his role as Charlie in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He has also appeared as Dale in Horrible Bosses and worked on movies that include Pacific Rim, The Lego Movie, and Hotel Artemis.

Day’s portrayal of Charlie in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which has been on the air since 2005, has helped it to become a modern-day cult classic. For those that don’t know, the series revolves around a gang of friends, including Danny DeVito, that run an Irish pub in South Philadelphia.

Now in its 14th season, FX just renewed the series for another year. According to CNN, the network claims the show is the “longest-running live-action American sitcom.”

What’s with Charlie and the waitress?

Fans of the show know Charlie is obsessed with a waitress who has been with the show from the start. According to Fandom, he openly stalks the woman, “despite numerous restraining orders.”

The waitress just so happens to be Day’s wife in real life. In 2005, Ellis started working side by side with her now-husband. It was her first major role as an actress and a sign of what was to come.

In 2008, she starred in and co-wrote the film A Quiet Little Marriage. From there, she appeared in several sitcoms, and in 2011 landed a role on New Girl, playing Caroline alongside Zooey Deschanel. She also appeared on the sitcom The Grinder with Fred Savage and has a few other films under her belt.

Ironically, one of Ellis’ first jobs before becoming an actress was working as a waitress at the Olive Garden in Burbank.

The waitress says her favorite role is working with her husband on the set of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Ellis told GQ that she enjoys talking with Charlie Day about acting, saying,

“It’s a really beautiful and exciting part about our relationship; I can’t imagine as an actor or an artist not having someone that I couldn’t talk to about the process. It’s really an enrichment for me.”

When not working, the couple shares a home in Los Angeles, California, with their 9-year-old son.
