Given all the controversy that’s occurred in the online beauty industry, Jaclyn Hill’s “lipstick” scandal of 2019 seems to be a thing of the past. The 29-year-old has mostly managed to stay out of the news in 2020 and is getting back to basics by recording YouTube videos for her millions of fans. But, any public figure deals with the occasional backlash. Recently, Hill proposed a concept for a new YouTube video which sparked a debate on Twitter.

On July 1, 2020, Hill took to her Twitter page to ask her fans about their advice for a possible YouTube video. The Jaclyn Cosmetics founder asked her fans if they would be interested in her filming a Sephora haul. A haul video is an unveiling of a large number of products, typically from the same store. In the videos, YouTubers often give their opinions of said products. The videos are popular amongst influencers, but they’ve slowed down substantially in recent times.

Jaclyn Hill considers filming a $2,000 Sephora makeup haul video

“Should I film a Sephora haul?? Or just show all of it on IG stories? It’s literally $2,000 in product! I lost my mind you guys!” Hill posted on Twitter. Fans immediately had very polarizing responses to Hill’s suggestion. Some felt excited by the prospect and encouraged her to record the video post haste. Others, however, felt that Hill was flaunting her wealth and that posting a haul would ill-timed and insensitive.

“The world is falling apart. No one cares about your $2000 Sephora haul. It is bad timing,” one Twitter user responded to Hill’s tweet. “Oh yay #jaclynhill is filming a too many dollars Sephora haul. Right when ppl are out of work, struggling, pandemic going on-read the room, Jaclyn,” another person chimed in about the founder of Jaclyn Cosmetics.

Twitter users have mixed reactions to the Jaclyn Cosmetics founder’s tweet

“Let’s be clear, #jaclynhill has always been tone-deaf and deals with real life issues with her shopping addiction. No one, and I mean no one, is doing $2000 Sephora hauls because they’re not idiots and understand recommending favorite products is unrelatable when people are jobless,” yet another person chimed in, clearly in opposition to Hill’s idea.

Others, however, had a different opinion about Hill’s proposed Sephora haul. Many people felt that Hill could provide them with a welcome reprieve by filming content that is is “typical” to take their minds off of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and all the devastation it is causing.

Will Hill film the YouTube video?

“I’ve suffered heavily because of COVID and worry about it daily. I ENJOY coming to YouTube and watching stuff like this. She is helping my mental state tremendously by giving me some normalcy and taking my mind off MY life,” one of Hill’s fans chimed in about her possibly shooting the Sephora haul video.

“Film a haul!!! I miss YouTube hauls like the old days! Gives us something to actually sit down and look forward to like a tv show! IG never holds my attention the same way,” another person chimed in, citing that they were missing the entertainment factor in their life. But, despite the polarizing response to Hill’s suggestion, or perhaps because of it, she has not yet shared her Sephora haul. Only time will tell if she’ll eventually change her mind.
