Britney Spears’ younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, secured a book deal before the pop icon to tell her side of their family story. The 30-year-old younger sister talked about her upcoming book, Things I Should Have Said, in an interview with ABC News Nightline co-anchor Juju Chang on Good Morning America on Jan. 12. However, the book’s original title stole a line from one of Britney Spears’ hit singles.

What is Jamie Lynn Spears’ book about?

Jamie Lynn Spears’ book description does not mention her sister or Britney’s name once. However, it does mention “growing up in one of America’s most tabloid-famous families.” Things I Should Have Said is Jamie Lynn’s story, and she defended her right to tell it in the GMA interview.

“It was really important to me, first off, to honor my voice,” she told Chang in the ABC interview. “I have to do it, or how else can I expect my daughters to stand up for themselves?”

Jamie Lynn and Britney share the same parents, Lynne Spears and James Parnell Spears. They both became childhood stars, growing up in the spotlight. When a court granted Jamie Spears a conservatorship over Britney in 2008, Jamie Lynn was 17 and pregnant. She details her life in All That and Zoey 101 and then Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias in her book. From the description, it sounds like the book isn’t about her sister, Britney, at all. However, the original leaked title had a certain Britney ring to it.

Jamie Lynn Spears’ original book title stole a line from Britney’s debut hit single

On July 9, 2021, Jamie Lynn Spears’ publisher, Worthy Publishing, shared the upcoming book’s title as I Must Confess on their website. The title references Britney’s 1998 hit debut single, “Baby One More Time.” However, the backlash over the title prompted a swift backpedal from the publisher.

“We deeply regret that incorrect and incomplete information about her book has appeared in the public space, particularly at this sensitive time for Jamie Lynn and her family,” Worthy said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “We look forward to sharing accurate and complete details about the project at the appropriate time and to celebrating the release of her memoir with Jamie Lynn and her fans next year.”

A mental health organization rejected the book proceeds donation

Jamie Lynn Spears intended to donate the proceeds from her book to This Is My Brave. However, after backlash from Britney’s supporters, the nonprofit mental health organization decided to reject the donation.

“We heard you. We’re taking action,” read the charity’s statement shared on Instagram. “We are deeply sorry to anyone we offended. We are declining the donation from Jamie Lynn Spears’ upcoming book.”

Jamie Lynn Spears’ book comes out on Jan. 18, 2022, but is currently available for preorder.
