Jeffrey Wright made his film debut in the 1990 film Presumed Innocent, in which he played the role of the prosecuting attorney. After that, he appeared in the 1991 TV mini-series Separate But Equal. Wright made his Broadway debut in 1993 in play Angels in America: Millennium Approaches. He played three roles in the production. He went on to reprise his role in Angels in America: Perestroika, as well as in HBO’s 2003 version, Angels in America.

Wright rose to fame after portraying the late painter Jean Michele Basquiat in the 1996 film Basquiat. His other performances include starring roles in Syriana, The Hunger Games, The Manchurian Candidate, and Westworld.
