Jennifer Lopez is engaged to Alex Rodriguez. Once married, this will mark her fourth marriage. At 50 years old, it’s no surprise that she’s been married three times, has had five engagement rings, and several other long-term relationships. However, JLo recently claimed her first two marriages don’t count. Keep reading to find out why she would make this claim, and how she’s finally found her happy ending.

Jennifer Lopez’s romantic history

Lopez’s first marriage was in 1997 to Cuban waiter Ojani Noa. The romance didn’t last long. According to Noa, the relationship broke down because “she made the choice of her career instead of [him].”

After a long relationship with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, the next man she married was backup dancer Chris Judd. Jennifer’s career is blamed for the breakup of this marriage as well. Judd told US Weekly, that it was “tough to be in the limelight.”

He continued: “You kind of have to take it and accept it and embrace it. Once you stop fighting it, it smoothes itself over. If you try to keep that privacy, it drives you nuts and that’s why people break.”

A few months after JLo divorced Judd, the media went wild for her new relationship with actor Ben Affleck. The couple dominated headlines throughout their engagement, but a wedding never happened. They called it off the day before they were to tie the knot in 2004.

Her most successful relationship, so far, was a seven-year marriage to singer Marc Anthony. The couple had two children — twins Max and Emme — who were born in 2008. After a three-year separation, Jennifer and Marc officially divorced in 2014. Jennifer received primary physical custody of the children.

She told W magazine: “When it comes to work, I never get tired. But with personal failures, I have thought, this is too hard. When my marriage [to Anthony] ended, it was not easy to find forgiveness. It wasn’t the dream that I hoped for, and it would have been easier to fan the flames of resentment, disappointment, and anger. But Marc is the father of my children, and that’s never going to go away. So I have to work to make things right. And that is, by far, the hardest work I do.”

Why Jennifer Lopez doesn’t count her first two marriages

“I’ve been married three times,” Jennifer said in a new YouTube video. “Once was nine months and once was 11 months. So I don’t really count those. I was married to Marc for 10 years with the kids. I was very young the first two times I tried to get married. I’m saying tried to get married,” she said, placing emphasis on the word “tried.”

She continued by explaining why the first two marriages failed- she got married for the wrong reasons.

“It seems like in this life you’re always surrounded by people so you’re never lonely but it’s very lonely. So you always want somebody with you. So I felt like if I got married then I would always have somebody but that’s not how life works. That’s not how it goes, a bad reason to get married. Not the right one, the wrong one. The right one is when you find somebody who makes you better.”

This time, it looks like Jennifer finally has a partner she can be happy with. She and Alex are planning to tie the knot sometime next year. Wedding plans are just getting started.

“It’s great to have a best friend and a partner that you can really build with,” Lopez said about her relationship with Alex. “We’re both very similar. Having someone who understands you from the inside as far as ‘I really want to work hard, I really love what I do and want to work hard at it and understand that it doesn’t mean I don’t love you’ We love each other and we’re doing this together… together we make each other better.”
