What would another Sonic the Hedgehog movie look like without Dr. Robotnik? The movie trilogy’s producers started pondering that question for Sonic 3 after Jim Carrey revealed that he’d like to retire soon. If Carrey does leave acting, it could mean he won’t reprise his Robotnik role for the third time. Here’s what the producers had to say about the comedian and Sonic 3.

Jim Carrey recently said he was ‘fairly serious’ about retirement after ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’

After a successful career spanning four decades, with several hits like The Mask and Ace Ventura, Carrey is considering a break from Hollywood. He spoke about his possible retirement in a recent interview with Access Hollywood, revealing that he’s “done enough” in his career.

“I really love my spiritual life … [and] feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough,” he said.

Carrey later doubled down on his statement in another interview with Entertainment Tonight. He explained that he’d love to get away from the spotlight and become “frighteningly normal.”

“Like, there’s 25 years of Mystery Science Theater I have to catch up on. And there’s painting. I do paint. I’m gonna be putting out NFTs. I’ll announce that on Twitter soon. And that’s kinda fun for me still,” he added.

‘Sonic 2’ producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher said they ‘wouldn’t even try’ to recast Jim Carrey if he does retire

Carrey has played Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog since the first film in 2020. As one of the main villains in the video game franchise, there’s room for Robotnik to return again in another Sonic movie. However, that plan may change if Carrey retires. And if that is the case, fans don’t need to worry about a recast.

“We wouldn’t even try,” Sonic producer Neal H. Moritz told IGN of a Robotnik recast in Sonic 3.

Adding to that, producer Toby Ascher said Carrey is always welcome to come back to the franchise at any time.

“Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family. And he’ll always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he’d like to be around,” Ascher said. “We love Jim, and he’s so special. What he does with Robotnik is so incredible. We would love him as long as he’d like to be there with us.”

For what it’s worth, Moritz also said he thinks Carrey “loves Robotnik so much” that he might not be able to give up the character.

The producers didn’t say which Sonic villain would replace Robotnik if Carrey didn’t return. However, there are plenty to choose from, such as Metal Sonic or Black Doom.

Although it’s likely several months away, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is already confirmed. Paramount announced back in February that the film is in the works, but few details have been revealed. The threequel will become part of a larger Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe, which also includes a Knuckles TV show starring Idris Elba.
