In a Father’s Day post dedicated to her dad, Jerry Stevens, Joanna Gaines revealed she almost didn’t become the force in home decor we know her as today. Her life could’ve ended up very different from the one she has today.

Joanna Gaines almost took over her dad’s tire business

In honor of Father’s Day, Joanna took to Instagram to share a heartfelt post about her father. In it, she revealed she had a specific, and very different, plan for her future.

She revealed she almost worked in her dad’s tire shop.

“I had the privilege of working with him for ten years at his tire shop,” Joanna wrote.

Working with her dad she learned “that determination and hard work with a mix of patience and grace can not only help in the garden but also with family, business and life,” she continued.

“I always thought I would take over his shop when he retired, this was at least the plan,” she added.

Joanna Gaines revealed ‘hidden dreams’ to her father

Joanna and her husband, Chip Gaines, are the duo behind HGTV’s hit series Fixer Upper. Although the show has ended, the couple has now cemented themselves as big players in the design and home renovation industry.

They’ve literally changed the landscape of Waco, Texas, where they live with their children and farm animals and continue to spread their design ethos through product lines at Target and other retailers.

But what if that never happened? Joanna explained when she met Chip she realized she “had some hidden dreams.”

“Once I met Chip I started realizing I had some hidden dreams in my heart but was scared to let my dad down,” Joanna wrote.

She praised her dad for encouraging her to follow her dreams.

“When he got wind that I was ready for something else he quickly sat me down and told me to go for it and do what my heart was telling me to do,” she said.

The design maven ended the post with a joke.

“And I love it that every time I smell tires I think of you and the good ol’ days (and now that you work here with me you have to admit it’s a lot nicer to come home smelling like candles),” she said with a winking smiley face emoji.

Here’s Joanna Gaines’s entire post to her father:

Happy Father’s Day to the plant daddy of all plant daddy’s.

“I got my love for plants from this man- he has taught me that determination and hard work with a mix of patience and grace can not only help in the garden but also with family, business and life.

I had the privilege of working with him for ten years at his tire shop and he taught me about these things 1st hand. I always thought I would take over his shop when he retired, this was at least the plan.

I’m thankful for all the things you’ve taught me Dad- you were determined and worked so hard for your three daughters, you loved us with great patience and grace. And I love it that every time I smell tires I think of you and the good ol’ days (and now that you work here with me you have to admit it’s a lot nicer to come home smelling like candles 😉). I love you so much Dad, Happy Father’s Day! ❤️”
