Joanna Gaines explains the history of the biscuit recipe

Magnolia Network recently shared a video on Instagram teasing an episode of Magnolia Table. Joanna explained how she came up with a biscuit recipe for her family and what made it unique.

“I love biscuits so much that I thought today we could dedicate an entire episode to all things biscuits,” she says in the clip from her show.”

Joanna continued, “Chip is one of those guys that is always on the lookout for the best biscuits and gravy. So I just kind of sat down one day and said, ‘What is it that you’re looking for?’ Let me see if I can help you.”

The celebrity cook said that for six months she worked in the kitchen “to try to figure out the perfect biscuit” for the Gaines family. Joanna said that every Saturday she would make biscuits for Chip and the kids to taste them and give them their feedback.

“I remember that six months into it I wanted them to be a little richer, so I added two eggs and that was the day that all of the kids and Chip unanimously voted that this was going to be our biscuit recipe,” she added.

What is the secret to Chip’s favorite biscuit?

Making the perfect biscuit created by Joanna for Magnolia Table is an intricate process and according to the Magnolia website, it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to make. The directions start to whish together 4 cups of self-rising flour, 2 tablespoons of baking powder, and 1 tablespoon of baking soda.

As all the previous ingredients are mixed together, 2 large beaten eggs will be combined into the mix. The next step requires adding 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk “until the dough comes together into a sticky mass.” Once there’s enough consistency in the mix, you will need to refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.

Once the dough is ready, you preheat the oven to 400°F and a rack in the middle of the oven. Cooks can use a round cutter to make about 20 biscuits. The next step requires transferring the biscuits to a prepared baking sheet. The biscuits will be topped off with the remaining egg and buttermilk brushed on top. Baking the biscuits will take about 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Delay in Magnolia Network launch was the best

Magnolia Table is a show developed by Joanna for the Magnolia Network. The latter was originally scheduled to launch in 2020 but with the pandemic, many productions shut down. Discovery thought it would be best to push back the launch as shows went back into production amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) safety protocols.

The network finally launched at the beginning of 2022 and Joanna thinks that they “couldn’t have planned it better.”

“It’s January, it’s a new year. Just the message of hope and inspiration from these storytellers and the stories that they’re telling… The world is ready for that kind of beauty to be seen,” she told Good Morning America.

Magnolia Network is now available on cable having taken over the DIY Network.
