Joanna Gaines might be one of the nation’s biggest television stars, but she’s still dealing with being stuck at home like the rest of us. The former Fixer Upper star has been busy with her five kids at home, but she’s needed some downtime for herself, too. And on her recent Food Network special, she revealed that her garden has been the best thing keeping her sane during quarantine.

Joanna Gaines has been spending time cooking while in quarantine

With so many people hunkered down, it’s natural for us to find new ways to entertain ourselves. And Gaines has done just that: She’s been spending plenty of time in her kitchen, testing out new recipes for her cooking show and throwing together some old favorites from her cookbook, “Magnolia Table.”

Gaines recently produced a Food Network cooking special, filmed by her 14-year-old daughter, Ella, where she showed fans some of her favorite recipes that she’s been cooking up while in quarantine. Plus, with five kids at home, it’s safe to say the Gaines family has been going through plenty of food.

She revealed that her garden has been her favorite thing about staying home

During her special, Ella asked her mother how she’s been handling quarantine. And when it came to Gaines’ favorite thing about staying home, her garden was the first thing on her mind. ““The garden has really been a place of just comfort… and peace,” Gaines said. Many people have been looking for a distraction during these uncertain times.

“Cutting all the tulips… the garden has been my favorite thing – I would be the first to advocate planning a garden sooner than later,” she added. Gaines also explained to her daughter that, though she’s seen some things like this in life before (she remembered people buying things in bulk during Y2K), she’s never quite been through something as life-altering as this quarantine.

Gaines has said in the past that she loves gardening with her kids

Gaines’ love for gardening has seemed to rub off on her children. Back when Fixer Upper was still filming, the show would often cut to Gaines and her kids working on the family garden at home. And she recently revealed that gardening with her kids helps them all connect. Gaines said that it was an opportunity for all of them to learn how to do something together, and her kids certainly loved playing in the dirt when they were little.

Gaines recently gave fans more info about her new cooking show, too

In addition to gardening, Gaines has developed a true love for cooking. So much so that she’s been hinting at a brand new cooking show on her and Chip Gaines’ Magnolia Network, which is set to launch on October 4, 2020.

Gaines explained that she and her husband recently restored an old grist mill in Waco, and though they plan to use it as a rental property, its beautiful kitchen inspired the two of them to host a cooking show in the space. Gaines gave fans a sneak peek of the construction that went on, and she previewed a cooking demo in the gorgeous, rustic kitchen for her fans to see.
