Since Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Reylo has been a controversial ship. The Skywalker saga is officially over in Star Wars, but fans are still debating the ship on social media. After John Boyega tweeted about Reylo, the debate among fans intensified. Warning, this article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

John Boyega tweeted photos of Rey and Kylo Ren

One of the main problems Star Wars fans have with Reylo is that the ship originated from abuse. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren tortures and manipulates Rey. While the two grow closer in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren emotionally abuses Rey by telling her she is “nothing” in an attempt to manipulate her into joining him.

In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the two appear as adversaries for a majority of the film. They constantly bring up what they find worst about each other. At the end of the movie, a redeemed Ben Solo sacrifices his life to bring Rey back from the dead. The two share a kiss, and then Ben becomes one with the Force and dies.

Boyega seemed to reference the back and forth abuse in a Twitter post. In the tweet, Boyega posted a series of photos of Rey and Kylo Ren fighting. He sarcastically captioned the photos, “Star Wars romance.”

Fans had mixed responses to John Boyega’s tweet

After Boyega tweeted, he was both praised and attacked by Star Wars fans. Those opposed to Reylo found Boyega’s tweet to be valid, and were happy he seems to be speaking out about the franchise’s flaws now that his time in the movies is done.

“I don’t even watch Star Wars and I know John Boyega got nothin but points,” a Twitter user wrote.

“Your girlfriend never stabbed in you the chest before? Weird…,” a fan replied.

“reylo is abusive! stay mad,” tweeted a fan.

Others felt Boyega should not criticize the relationship or the Star Wars franchise.

“Why are you making fun of your own collegues’ work and what they have done to bring life and emotion in these two characters? The disrespect you have your own movies and the work behind it is sad. Blame the writers and the whole Disney for promoting Rey and Kylo as the romance,” a fan tweeted.

The actor responded to some fans’ replies

As fans flooded Boyega’s tweet with replies, he took the time to respond to some of them.

One fan asked, “Do you still have a crush on Daisy then?”

“Star Wars is a movie not a documentary,” Boyega responded.

Daisy Ridley has made her feelings about Reylo known

Boyega is not the only Star Wars actor who has seemed uneasy about the idea of Reylo. Leading up to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Ridley was asked how she felt about Reylo.

“I do know about Reylo. I don’t know how I feel about it because everyone’s talking about the toxic thing of a relationship when it’s essentially emotional [abuse]. It’s a tricky road,” Ridley said in April 2019. “I do feel like, deep down, Kylo thinks what he’s doing is right and he doesn’t think he’s wrong, but he has also killed so many people. So I can’t really get behind in that, in a personal way. “
