On the show, they had some history. Nini and Ricky dated and then broke up and then there was that whole drama with Ej. Still, being cast as Troy and Gabriella in their high school’s production of High School Musical was a huge turning point for these characters and their relationship.
By the end of season 1, Nini and Ricky of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series are back together. Still, some fans are wondering about the actors behind these characters. Olivia Rodrigo portrays one of the series’ main characters, Nini, and Joshua Bassett portrays her partner, Ricky.

No, Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett aren’t dating. They are good friends, though, who did first meet during the audition process for this Disney+ original series. In fact, based on a few interviews and posts on social media, fans figured out that the entire cast is pretty close to one another.
During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Wildcats met over video chat and posted pictures about it, to the delight of viewers. Olivia Rodrigo commented on her relationship with the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series cast.
“I’m so excited to go back to Salt Lake. We’ve been texting and the whole cast, we’re one big happy family. We get to go back to summer camp, essentially, and hang out with our best pals every day. I’m looking forward to that,” Rodrigo said during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
The duo wrote ‘Just For a Moment’ Together
These two are actors and musicians. For season 1, Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett collaborated on a song together, which eventually made it to the show. The duo performed “Just For a Moment” as their characters Nini and Ricky and later recorded an acoustic version for Disney’s YouTube channel.
This wouldn’t be the first song Olivia Rodrigo wrote for the series. The actress wrote and performed the song “All I Want” as her character, Nini. Outside of the series, both Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett write music, often posting it as videos to social media.
There’s no word regarding if Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett will write music together for this mockumentary’s second season, which is already written and announced. (The cast is doing the stage version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.) Until then, fans can watch episodes of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney’s streaming platform.
