Joshua Bassett Unfollows Olivia Rodrigo as She Returns for Season 3 of ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’

Olivia Rodrigo’s co-star and ex-boyfriend, Joshua Bassett, has unfollowed her on social media a year after hit single, “drivers license,” came out. Bassett and Rodrigo had an acrimonious split, and their breakup inspired many of the songs on the pop star’s debut album Sour. Now, it is confirmed that the former partners will be working together again on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, just as Bassett stopped following Rodrigo online. Here are all the details we know so far.

Olivia Rodrigo will return for season 3 of ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’

Olivia Rodrigo was named Time’s 2021 Entertainer of the Year. In her Dec. 9 interview with the publication, the reporter confirmed that Rodrigo will return to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series for season 3 of the Disney show.

Since Rodrigo has found massive success as a pop star in 2021 following the release of her debut album Sour, there were rumors that she would not return to the series. Not only does the “brutal” singer have a busy schedule as a musician, but returning to the show would also mean working alongside her ex-boyfriend, Joshua Bassett. Bassett is believed to be the inspiration behind most, if not all, of the breakup songs on Sour.

In the Time article, Rodrigo is quoted as saying, “Songwriting is the thing I take most seriously in my life. It’s the most personally gratifying too.”

The reporter went on to write, “She’ll return for Season 3 of the High School Musical series, which starts filming in January, and maybe she’ll act more in the future. But music is her priority.”

Joshua Bassett unfollowed Olivia Rodrigo on social media

It appears that Bassett has unfollowed the “good 4 u” singer on Instagram. It’s unclear when he stopped following Olivia Rodrigo, but the news is intriguing, considering they will continue to work together on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Bassett has 2.8 million followers on the social media platform, and he follows just 288 accounts. Rodrigo has 21.1 million followers, and she follows zero accounts.

One of Rodrigo’s most recent posts is a video clip celebrating the one-year anniversary of her debut single, “drivers license,” which came out on Jan. 8, 2021. The song is about her breakup with Bassett.

Joshua Bassett hasn’t spoken to his ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ co-star since ‘drivers license’ came out

On Dec. 30, Olivia Rodrigo told British Vogue that she gets over an ex by “cutting off all contact.” Her comment confirmed what Joshua Bassett previously said about her in his Dec. 3 interview with GQ.

Bassett revealed that he and Rodrigo haven’t been in touch since she released her first song about him. “[She] hasn’t spoken to me since ‘drivers license’ came out,” Bassett said, although he claimed he has tried to get in contact with her. He also released three new songs telling his version of the breakup with Rodrigo.

Fans will be watching to see how the former partners interact on season 3 of the Disney show and if they make any more music about each other in the future.
