Kanye’s Sunday Service

Sunday Service was born out of West’s desire to better himself. By combining his love of music, fashion, and God, West hand-crafted his own religion.

West explained Sunday Service like this to David Letterman:

It’s just an idea we had to open up our hearts to make music that we felt was as pure and as positive as possible and just do it for an hour every Sunday, and have something where people can just come together and feel good with their families.

Kim Kardashian West shared with Elle that Sunday Services are “More like a healing experience for [her] husband.” She went on to say: “It’s just music; there’s no sermon. It’s definitely something he believes in — Jesus — and there’s a Christian vibe. But there’s no preaching. It’s just a very spiritual Christian experience.”

West’s Sunday Service continues to evolve. While the gatherings are centered around spiritual music, sermons have also been incorporated from special guests and collaborators, including gospel singer Kelly.

Kelly is no stranger to church. Growing up, faith was an important part of Kelly’s background. While she is widely regarded as a pop artist, Kelly grew up singing gospel music.

In speaking with Relevant Magazine, Kelly explained how she grew closer to God: “I went to this camp through my church, and really had an encounter with God. He kind of just met me right there and just revealed Himself in a powerful way.”

West brought his Sunday Service to the California Worship Center in North Hollywood in Aug. 2019, where 27-year-old Kelly was in attendance. She said West didn’t say “‘come up and sing.'”

Instead, Kelly recalled how he asked her to “‘lend [her] gift.'” West wanted Kelly to lead the service, but after she saw a microphone, Kelly thought: “I wasn’t expecting to get up and sing, but then there was a microphone so I thought, well, why not.”

Kelly has been friends with the Kardashian West family since North West attended one of her shows. In the past, the Gospel singer mentioned that she would love to collaborate with West on more spiritual work in the future.

Other celebrities in attendance at Sunday Service

In an effort to share his journey with others, West created his Sunday Service, where people can gather to enjoy amazing music and a lighthearted and positive atmosphere — on occasion, they might even catch a glimpse of a few celebrities in attendance.

West’s wife and their four children — North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm — are often in attendance at Sunday Service. Momager Kris Jenner also attends regularly.

Other members of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, including Kendall Jenner and her sister’s boyfriend, Travis Scott, have also attended Sunday Service.

Still, other celebs spotted at Sunday Service include Bradley Cooper, Justin Bieber, and Brad Pitt. Soon-to-be married Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have also made appearances at West’s religious gathering.

Considering her dedication to her music and her worship, it’s possible Kelly could start to play a bigger role in West’s future Sunday Services.
