Kate Middleton and Prince William met fans in Scotland

Kate and her husband, Prince William, have been visiting Scotland as a part of the royal family’s UK-wide tour to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.

The couple—who goes by the titles Earl and Countess of Strathearn when they are in Scotland—visited various places in the country as a part of Mental Health Awareness Week. For example, they visited the Wheatley Group in Glasgow to see the organization’s work in helping people facing poverty and homelessness. The pair also went to the University of Glasgow to talk to students and staff members about mental health.

During several parts of Kate and William’s tour, fans got a chance to meet the royal couple. When Kate and William came to the University of Glasgow, one student decided to ask them for help with a crossword puzzle.

According to The Times, student Jack Baird—who is a self-professed “crossword puzzle fan”—had a puzzle from the May 2 issue of the newspaper. The clue stated that the answer had something to do with the “sovereign’s annual allowance.”

“It was two words of five and four letters,” Baird said. “I couldn’t get the second word.”

He shared that he “gave it to Kate,” who came up with the answer. “She said it was ‘Civil List,’” Baird recalled.

“She was very excited,” he added. “It didn’t look like she was going to get it for a moment. I’m really chuffed. I’m going to frame it. She looked thrilled. I think she thought ‘I wouldn’t live this down if I get this wrong.’”

When royals meet people during their engagements, they often shake hands, talk, or receive flowers. They usually do not sign autographs or take pictures with fans.

However, according to Hello!, during an engagement in Glasgow, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were seen taking part in a selfie. Kate and William smiled for the camera, and William even placed his hand on a fan’s shoulder.

Additionally, according to Daily Mail, when William met a grandfather who was once homeless, the duke gave the man an embrace. The grandfather, William Burns, later shared, “I am a grandfather. It felt like a son hugging a father. It was the way he hugged me. I didn’t expect that really to be honest. It was a boost. I’ve never felt anything like it in my entire life before and my existence as a human being.”

Royals have historically remained physically and emotionally distant from people, but it seems William and Kate want to let go of some old traditions.
