Kate Middleton Was Brutally Mocked in the Press After She Got Engaged to Prince William
For the past several years, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has been a beloved royal. When Meghan, Duchess of Sussex joined the British royal family in 2018, she was picked apart, bullied, and constantly criticized the press. It didn’t help that the former actress was also compared to her sister-in-law.
Now, amid Megxit, Kate has once again been thrust in the spotlight. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has also made her more visible and accessible than she’s been in years. From her Zoom calls to the things she says and wears, the duchess is under a microscope yet again.
Unfortunately, all of this attention means newfound criticism and gossip. These are things that Kate hasn’t had to deal with in this magnitude since her engagement to Prince William 10 years ago.
Kate Middleton is dealing with a ton of criticism right now
Since she’s been carrying out her royal duties via Zoom at the moment, it appears that Kate is as wildly popular as she’es ever been. Unfortunately, this has also given a voice to naysayers. Just a few weeks ago, the duchess was reportedly blindsided when Tatler Magzine published a scathing report on her titled, “Catherine the Great.”
“[Journalist Anna Pasternak] manages to slag off [harshly criticize] her mother, makes William look weak and makes Kate look so dull,” royal expert Ingrid Seward told Newsweek. Though the Cambridges have taken legal action against Tatler, that hasn’t stopped the critics.
Royal fans just criticized one of Kate’s Zoom calls, calling her out of touch with reality, when she urged addicts to reach out for help. “I would urge the Royal Family to stop playing PR and realize how difficult this will be for everyone,” the fan said.
Prince William tried to defend Kate Middleton in the press before they got married
In the past, Prince William, in particular, has adhered to the royal family’s “stiff upper lip” policy which means they never complain or explain. However, as people became increasingly more interested in his relationship with Kate before they got engaged, he felt compelled to say something.
The future Crowned King released a statement urging privacy for Kate. However, that did not help. Still, Prince Charles was able to offer the future Queen Regent some advice. The Prince of Wales suggested there would be ebbs and flows to her popularity.
“The problem for Kate is, as her father in law said, she’s been put on a pedestal and it’s impossible to stay on a pedestal,” Seward told Newsweek. “There’s only one way and that’s down. She’s a goddess at the moment and everyone is saying how great she is and how hard she works but she can’t really keep up with that. She’s not a goddess, she’s a mom of three children and is probably absolutely exhausted.”

By the time Prince William and Kate got engaged in 2010, they’d been dating for nearly a decade. Of course, due to sexism, it was Kate who was bullied and harassed in the press for “hanging on” for so long.
“Her suitability as a royal bride was questioned and she was mocked for waiting around for a proposal,” royal expert Katie Nicholl revealed in the new royal documentary, William and Kate: Too Good to Be True? “The problem for Kate was that she did not have a career plan. William’s career path had already been mapped out. He was going to go to Sandhurst and after that, he was going to go into the RAF. Kate’s career path was far less certain and she did become the topic of a lot of negative stories. She was even called Waity-Katie.”
It appears that royal fans are trying to push Kate off of her pedestal once again.
