Being a member of the British royal family certainly has its ups and downs. It’s clear that you can do a great deal to help the less fortunate as a member of The Firm, but there are certainly major drawbacks to the job, especially if you’re a woman.

While the men of the royal family certainly haven’t walked through life unscathed, the women — the late Princess Diana, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in particular, have had to weather media storms and certain untruths that have been told about them.

The royal women have also had to deal with constant comparisons, even though they are all very different. Though she’s never met her late mother-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge is constantly being compared to Princess Diana even though they are nothing alike.

Kate Middleton is often compared to Princess Diana

Since her relationship with Prince William went public, Kate has constantly been compared to Princess Diana for her grace and elegance. Since the duchess wears the late princess’ engagement ring as her own, the press and public have been thrilled to draw comparisons between the women.

The Duchess of Cambridge is a devoted mother and she cares a great deal for others. However, she and Princess Diana actually have very little in common except for their elegant style.

In fact, Kate has embarked on her own royal path, one that will seemingly ensure she both survives and thrives within the royal fold.

Kate Middleton and Princess Diana’s personalities are very different

While the public is certainly fascinated by Kate, the mania surrounding Princess Diana was much more similar to what Meghan has experienced during her time in the royal family.

“She’s a lovely, lovely girl… But that extra something, which you would call the ‘X-factor’, the magic quality, charisma, it’s not there,” Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell said in an interview. “I met Mother Theresa. She had it. Pope John Paul II had it. The Queen has it. Diana certainly had it. Kate doesn’t.”

In fact, it is said that Kate is naturally very reserved and that she works hard to be a support to her husband, Prince William. However, she has no interest in outshining him. It’s something that Meghan has been accused of doing with Prince Harry.

Kate Middleton has more in common with Queen Elizabeth II than Princess Diana

While royal fans and experts have rushed to compare the Duchess of Cambridge to Princess Diana, royal author Victoria Murphy explained that she’s actually much like the queen.

“I’ve always thought that Kate has more in common personality-wise with the Queen; not an extrovert, but quietly self-assured with a love of the outdoors and the ability to compartmentalize,” Murphy explained to Yahoo UK. “I think she still remains more of a team player than a leader though and perhaps more of a listener than a talker, but I think these qualities are well-suited to her current and future roles.”
