At present, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge are the picture of royal perfection. If Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex embodied rebellion and modernity within the royal family, the Cambridges have fully leaned into tradition. As they continue to take on more and more responsibilities to prepare for the Duke of Cambridge to sit on the throne, the pair have an entire legacy resting on their shoulders.

Though they are very traditional in their values, the Cambridges still want to be sure that they are representing a 21st-century version of royal life. After all, as we’ve seen in the past with late Princess Diana and certainly with Megxit, royal life can easily feel stifling.

Despite the fact that Kate and Prince William follow a more old school model of what it means to be a royal, they still find time to carve out private time for themselves as a couple and with their young children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. In fact, some throwback photos reveal that the Cambridges were once completely carefree as well.

Inside Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship history

Today, the Cambridges are the perfect royal couple. However, the near-decade that led up to their 2011 wedding was full of twists and turns. The couple met back in 2001 while attending St. Andrews University. Though they began as friends, after seeing the duchess model in a fashion show, the duke was smitten.

Though they were officially in a relationship by the fall of 2001, the prince often dismissed rumors about dating Middleton in an effort to keep the press off of her tail. The pair would also break up twice before tying the knot. Once in 2004 and then again in 2007. “There were often spats, rows, and break-ups, and William and Kate tried to find their way both as young adults and as a couple,” royal biographer Andrew Morton wrote in his book, William and Catherine.

By the time the Cambridges did get in engaged in November of 2010, the British press and public had dubbed the duchess, “Waity Katy.”

Kate Middleton and Prince William are closer than ever

Despite those 2019 infidelity rumors surrounding the duke and socialite Rose Hanbury, and amid the stress of Megxit, the Cambridges are closer than ever. In fact, royal experts and fans have noticed that the pair have even engaged in more PDA as of late, something that had previously been a rarity for them.

“The Cambridges are busier than ever since Harry and Meghan left the U.K.,” an alleged source told US Weekly. “You’d think their hectic schedule would put strain on the marriage, but it’s actually brought them closer together. Working as a team and supporting each other is essential at a time like this, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.”

Now some photos from Prince William’s 26th birthday back in 2008 prove just how carefree the couple used to be, and how they might still be behind close doors.
