Kate Middleton’s coats are just one part of her very large — and expensive — wardrobe. The Duchess of Cambridge has steadily added to her closet since officially joining the British royal family in 2011. Oftentimes Kate repeats outfits but she also makes statements with her outerwear. Without further ado, here are some of Kate’s most statement-making coat moments.

1. Kate stood out with a red and white coat in 2018

Perhaps taking a cue from Queen Elizabeth II who favors bold colors, Kate’s coat made it easy to spot her in a crowd during a 2018 visit to Sweden and Norway. While the now-39-year-old may have been sporting the colors of the Norwegian flag despite being in Stockholm, Sweden, she still made a statement with her coat as she said hello to children.

2. Kate’s coat channeled Princess Diana

Long before saying “I do” to Prince William — five years to be exact — and four years before getting engaged in Kenya, Kate made a nod to Princess Diana. In December 2006 when she was still William’s girlfriend, the now-mother of three attended festivities at Sandhurst Military Academy.

She watched as William became an officer during a parade and swearing-in ceremony in Surrey, England. Kate’s red coat and black hat, from the color to the shape, were reminiscent of an outfit once worn by her late mother-in-law.

This wasn’t the first or the last time Kate dressed like Diana. She’s made subtle nods to Diana’s style as well as more obvious tributes on many occasions over the years.

3. Kate wore a plaid trench coat to a movie screening

What says Scotland more than plaid? Kate’s coat at a drive-in screening of Disney’s Cruella in May 2021 almost made for a splash than the car she and William arrived in. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge showed up to the screening to honor Scottish health workers in a Land Rover that was once owned by William’s grandfather, Prince Philip.

4. Kate wore a festive coat to a Christmas carol service

Kate’s bow-adorned red coat brought extra holiday cheer during a special outing in December 2021. The Duchess of Cambridge hosted Together at Christmas, a carol service filmed at Westminster Abbey, which is set to air in the U.K. on Christmas Eve. Kate wore a coat from designer Catherine Walker, according to Elle. She also included a message in the program.

Held to thank those who have helped their communities during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the concert was a family affair. Kate’s parents were there along with her brother, sister, and sister-in-law.

Another day, another bold coat from the Duchess of Cambridge. In February 2019, Kate’s coat did all the talking. She wore a blue cape coat and matching accessories for a walkabout with William. Once again she appears to have followed Queen Elizabeth’s lead opting for statement-making outerwear that makes her easy to spot.
