Titanic was the biggest hit movie of Kate Winslet’s career. It held the title of highest-grossing movie of all time from 1998 to 2010 and remains the highest-grossing of Winslet’s films. The film earned Winslet her second Oscar nomination, after one for Sense and Sensibility, although she would not win until 2009’s The Reader. However, Winslet never attended a Titanic premiere until 2012.

Winslet reflects on the landmark film on the Titanic Blu-ray. Part of her interview explains why she never ended up on the red carpet for Titanic until 15 years after it came out. Titanic is available on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD and is included in Paramount’s 10 Best Pictures Blu-ray collection.

Is the movie ‘Titanic’ shot in 3D or 2D?

In 1996-97, James Cameron filmed Titanic on 2D film. Cameron would become a major developer of 3D with Avatar and his documentaries. By 2012, Cameron converted Titanic to 3D for a rerelease on the centennial anniversary of the actual sinking. The Blu-ray covers how technicians went frame by frame to decide how each image would look in 3D. For Winslet, it meant another big movie premiere.

“My first reaction when Jim said we’re going to bring it out in 3D was how wonderful,” Winslet said. “A whole new generation of people who have maybe never seen it but certainly never seen it on a big screen will have that opportunity.”

Titanic premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1997. For the 3D release, producer Jon Landau insisted they return.

“The idea came up let’s do a premiere in Hollywood,” Landau said. “We said, ‘No. Let’s go do it in London. Let’s go back and do it again.’”

On the red carpet in 2012, Winslet explained to reporters why that was her first Titanic premiere.

“I actually never got to walk down a red carpet for Titanic because when they had the premiere in the UK I was unwell and in the hospital and couldn’t go, so this is great,” Winslet said.

The real reason Kate Winslet missed the first premiere

In 2012, perhaps for the sake of brevity on the red carpet, Winslet’s explanation was a personal illness. In 1999, Winslet told The Guardian that she had to miss the Titanic premiere to attend a funeral. Her ex-boyfriend, Stephen Tedre, died of bone cancer.

“I suppose I was a bit depressed by that… someone I had spent four and a half years of my life with had just died,” Winslet expressed. “It was just that people would even consider… they would be having conversations with me, saying things like, ‘Look, we understand, this must be a very hard time,’ and then they’d go on to say, ‘But don’t you think Stephen would have wanted it?’”
