Kate Winslet came to the rescue of a young co-star who had to film an intimate scene with another actor. Though it’s not in Winslet’s job description, she served as an intimacy coordinator on the film, hiding out in the trunk of a car to provide her support.

Kate Winslet assisted her young co-star in a unique way

Winslet is no doubt a helpful resource on any film set as an established and respected actor, but she stepped in with a huge assist for her Mare of Easttown co-star Angourie Rice when she had to do a sex scene.

Winslet plays Rice’s mother in the HBO series and definitely gave some motherly support when the younger actor needed it most.

Winslet shared the story during an interview with How I Found My Voice. Rice was 19 years old when she had to film an “intimate scene in a car,” so the Titanic star decided she wouldn’t be far from her on-screen daughter during the scene.

Winslet stepped in as an intimacy coordinator since there wasn’t one on set.

“Because there were no clothes that come off in the scene they didn’t consider bringing in an intimacy coordinator,” Winslet explained. “And I just got the sense that she was nervous. So I said to her, ‘I’m going to be around for this, I’m going to stay, I won’t leave the set.'”

“She said, ‘Thank god Kate, thank you so much’ and I ended up being in the car. I ended up being in the boot of the car,” Winslet added. She explained that she felt it was important to offer her support as “the only other people in their space” were two male camera operators in the car.

“I knew it would make them feel better to have that one person who would be able to put their hand up and say, ‘Actually we need to cut now, is everyone feeling OK?,’” she noted.

Kate Winslet wished she had an intimacy coordinator for her past roles

The involvement of intimacy coordinators is a fairly new practice and Winslet admitted having someone in that capacity would have been appreciated for her past roles.

“Sometimes even directors don’t feel comfortable communicating with actors about intimate scenes, even if it’s just kissing,” she explained.

“I definitely wish I had them in the past I definitely do,” Winslet noted. “I just could have done with that friend really. Just having a friend to say, ‘Can you ask him just to not put his hands there?’”

“So it’s not you having to say, which can be pretty awkward,” the actor admitted.

Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan had to maneuver their ‘Ammonite’ sex scenes

Since an intimacy coordinator was not used for Winslet’s film Ammonite, she and her co-star Saoirse Ronan had to maneuver their intimate scenes without assistance.

“It’s interesting we didn’t have them on Ammonite and I think it’s partly because at the time we made the film, it was 2019,” she explained. “Intimacy coordinators were only just slightly becoming a thing, they weren’t a legal requirement on film sets. “

Winslet continued, “Ammonite was truly a very low budget film, we didn’t have stunt doubles, hand doubles we barely even had a packed lunch. It wasn’t something that was ever offered to us.”

The actors worked together to play out the lesbian sex scenes in the film. “But Sairose and I, we felt quite confident in what we wanted to do with the characters in those intimate scenes,” Winslet explained. “I think the two of us together sort of looking after each other made us feel a bit better.”
