Former ‘Today Show’ anchor Katie Couric took a liking to Colin Firth

In 2011, Colin Firth won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of England’s Prince Albert in The King’s Speech. The film also received the Oscar for Best Picture, beating out strong contenders such as Black Swan, Inception, and The Fighter. Couric apparently agreed with the choice by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

“It was my favorite film of the group,” Couric told the New York Times’ Awards Season blog, The Carpetbagger, in 2011 of The King’s Speech. “I like historical films, I like period movies – I heart Colin Firth in a major way.”

The Today alum went on to reveal just how much she “hearts” Firth, admitting she keeps his photo in her home.

“I have a framed picture of him in my house, which a lot of people think is really weird,” Couric confessed, clarifying that she is not in the photo. “It’s just him.”

Katie Couric raved of ‘The King’s Speech’

While Couric clearly holds Firth in high esteem, she praised the entire film despite hearing of some criticisms on directing.

“I just thought it was a really, really good movie,” she explained. “I like movies about people triumphing over adversity, and I thought he did a great job. And I know it hasn’t been universally praised, a lot of people have criticized the way it’s been directed, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to know the flaws.”

The journalist got an extra bonus when she spotted Firth at the opening of The King’s Speech. She noted that he may have found her adoration a bit concerning.

“When I went to see it, Colin Firth was at the screening, which added to my enjoyment of the film,” Couric said. “He’s gonna call security when he reads this.”

Colin Firth and Katie Couric swapped segments

When Couric interviewed Firth on her talk show in 2014, she let him know that his image was taking up residence in her home.

“Some of my friends got a little concerned when they looked around my house and saw the way it was decorated,” Couric told the actor, throwing to a pre-recorded segment of herself in her home holding the photo of Firth.

“This is a picture of my boyfriend, Colin Firth,” Couric said in the piece. “We’ve been dating for about 4 years now. … He has that Heathcliffian quality – he’s kind of dark and brooding, and I like dark and brooding because they’re a challenge.”

After the segment, Couric assured Firth it was all in jest. The Oscar winner then played his own joke on Couric and the audience.

“I spend a lot of time on your website,” he facetiously told Couric. “I think I can outdo you, really.”

Firth then showed a clip of his house and fireplace, with a framed photo of Couric next to his own on the mantle. More photos of Couric were photoshopped in to scenes from The King’s Speech, much to the journalist’s delight.

“There’s a Katie Couric theme that’s very much alive in my professional and personal life,” Firth remarked with a laugh.

“I’m all verklempt… I have to tell you I’m blushing,” Couric said between giggles. “Thank you for being such a good sport.”
