Katy Perry delivered one of the more memorable Super Bowl performances in recent history. Her 2016 performance at Super Bowl XLIX had the highest viewership ever, eclipsing 120 million viewers.

And although the Weeknd’s Super Bowl LV performance didn’t bring in nearly as many viewers, Perry respects his efforts. She understands how difficult it can be to perform in the Super Bowl, especially because she nearly had a wardrobe malfunction.

The “Roar” singer revealed that her performance costume, a latex dress designed to look like beach balls, ripped in half while she was rehearsing for the big game. After that happened, she had a better understanding of why she had to rehearse so much prior to the game.

Perry gave her opinion on The Weeknd’s halftime performance during a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live

“It was really cool, I liked how Abel commanded the field and all of the dancers were moshing and throwing elbows, it was very kind of, punk rock,” Perry said.

She compared performing at the Super Bowl to a rocket launch

Perry knows what it’s like to perform in the Super Bowl, and described it as an
“intense” experience.  She could relate to the range of emotions The Weeknd was likely feeling while he was on stage.

“No it was amazing, it’s so intense to play the Super Bowl,” Perry said. “I mean I saw Abel’s eyes and they were like, [makes noise] and I was like, ‘Yeah, I know the feeling.’ ‘It’s—like actually, before I went on stage, I had never given birth. … I’ve never been close to death or life, or through that thin threshold,” Perry said. “And I was like, ‘Ooh, is this what it really feels like? Because this is intense. Because it’s like a rocket launch.”

More than anything, the pressure to deliver a perfect performance weighed on Perry the most.

“And you’re kind of waiting backstage, ready to go and do your show, and you only have 12 minutes to get on the field and get everything prepped,” Perry said. “And everything has to be … there’s no room for error. It was intense, so…”

Thankfully, The Weeknd’s performance didn’t have any major malfunctions that viewers were aware of, but Perry recalled having a close call when it was her year to perform.

Apparently, when she was rehearsing and had to slide down a giant lion that would be used during her performance, her costume was torn in half.

“The balloon outfit, the beach balloon outfit, it was made of latex,” Perry said. “And when I went down on the fireman’s pole, it split in half.”

At that moment, she understood why she was required to rehearse so many times.

“I was a few days out from actually playing the day,” Perry said. “And I was like, ‘Oh, this is why we do rehearsals with costumes. Got it.’”
