Keiko Agena Has a Favorite ‘Gilmore Girls’ Scene

Lane Kim and Rory Gilmore were best friends. While Rory headed off to Chilton, Lane stayed back at Stars Hollow High and provided a haven for Rory during all seven seasons of the show. Keiko Agena, the actor who portrayed Lane, spent most of her time working with Alexis Bledel, but her favorite scene had nothing to do with Rory.

Keiko Agena spent seven seasons playing Lane Kim on Gilmore Girls. Lane might have been Rory’s sidekick, but she quickly became a fan favorite in her own right. Agena’s portrayal of Lane was both light and complicated. Her difficult relationship with her mother, Mrs. Kim, offered a stark contrast to Lorelai Gilmore’s friendship-based parenting of Rory. Agena even has a favorite Gilmore Girls scene. Unsurprisingly, it includes Mrs. Kim.

Agena portrayed Lane in more than 150 episodes of Gilmore Girls. Still, she was able to identify her favorite scene. In a 2016 AMA on Reddit, Agena revealed the one scene she considers the most memorable. She told fans that she loved the moment when she officially got kicked out of her house. Agena noted that she enjoyed the scene so much because of Emily Kuroda, the actor who portrayed Mrs. Kim for the duration of the series.

The scene Agena referred to came in the eleventh episode of the fourth season. In the episode,“In The Calmor and the Clangor”, Lane snuck out of her house to perform at CBGB with Hep Alien. When the gig didn’t go off as expected, she retreated to Rory’s dorm instead of sneaking back into her house. Mrs. Kim, unbeknownst to Lane, was already awake and looking for her missing daughter. When Lane finally headed back to Stars Hollow, she proposed a scenario where she could quit the Seventh-day Adventist college she was attending and continue playing with her band. In a moment of eerie calm, the overprotective mother told Lane she could either move out and live as she pleased or adhere to her strict rules. Lane moved out.

What is Keiko Agena working on now?

Agena might have gotten her big break on Gilmore Girls, but she’s worked steadily since the series went off the air. Now in her 40s, Agena has taken on more mature roles. She appeared in 13 Reasons Why, the controversial Netflix original that followed the events that led to a teenager’s suicide. Following her time on 13 Reasons Why, Agena took on a part in Better Call Saul before landing on Prodigal Son as Dr. Edrisa Tanaka.

Prodigal Son has filmed two seasons. Agena has appeared in all 33 episodes so far. Fox has not announced whether the series will be renewed for a third season just yet. News about the fate of the show isn’t expected for several more weeks.

Would Keiko Agena return for a second Gilmore Girls revival?

Agena reprised her role in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and she would happily return if a second revival were to happen, too. In 2018, Agena told Entertainment Tonight that she would love to work on another installment of the series. Whether that will ever come to be, however, remains to be seen.

‘Gilmore Girls’: There Is One Storyline That Fans Want to See in a Second Revival and It Has Nothing to Do With Rory

Earlier this year, some social media movements gave fans a bit of hope. First, a page appeared on IMDb that suggested a second season was on the way. The page has since been removed. Soon after, the Gilmore Girls Instagram became active again, leading viewers to assume an announcement might just be days away. Nothing has ever come of it. Still, there is hope. Lauren Graham, the actor who portrayed Lorelai Gilmore for all seven seasons, revealed she has Gilmore Girls clause in her contract. She isn’t counting out a return, and neither is Agena.
