Sex and the City is coming back, thanks to the folks at HBO Max. The original series starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristen Davis was a hit on HBO two decades ago, so fans are excited to revisit their world. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be some glaring differences.

‘Sex and the City’ is coming back on HBO Max

HBO officially confirmed Sex and the City‘s revival in a mysterious promo video. The series, title And Just Like That…, will showcase Carrie (Parker), Miranda (Nixon), and Charlotte (Davis) as they navigate life in New York City in their fifties. The 10-episode series is set to begin filming in spring 2021.

Notably absent from the lineup is Kim Cattrall, who played the saucy Samantha Jones. While Cattrall has expressed her gratitude for the role several times since the show went off the air, she’s noted before that she didn’t want to become an actor who was known for just one role.

Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker’s feud

In addition to wanting to move on from the SATC universe, Cattrall and Parker had somewhat of a cold war in their years on the show and working on the two subsequent movies.

Rumors of bad blood between the two began in 2004 when the original show was in its sixth and final season, according to ELLE. Both of them initially downplayed the rumors and were able to put their differences aside for the two movies in 2008 and 2010.

But as the speculation grew, Cattrall admitted that there were issues with Parker. She famously wrote in a 2018 Instagram post that Parker was “cruel” to her and “not [her] friend.” Parker, however, has said she remembers their experiences differently.

When talks of a third Sex and the City movie began to surface, Cattrall made it clear that she had no desire to return to her role as Samantha in any future SATC projects. Instead, she wannted to focus on things that aligned more with her personal interests. In 2019, she told The Guardian, “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself,” hinting that she’d much rather not work on anything SATC-related.

Kim Cattrall had thoughts about who should play Samantha Jones

However, Cattrall never has bad things to say about her character Samantha. She still believes that Jones should be an integral part of the SATC universe, and even told Piers Morgan in 2017 that she would love to see the role recast in any future SATC projects. She also told Morgan about the “toxic relationship” between her and Parker.

“It’s a great part,” Cattrall said of Samantha. “I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it.” But as far as revisiting the role herself, Cattrall instead had a different suggestion.

“Another actress should play it,” she said. “Maybe they could make it an African American Samantha Jones or a Hispanic Samantha Jones.”

Still, Cattrall wished her former co-stars nothing but the best: “I will be the one in the audience cheering them on.”
