When it comes to the Kardashians, plenty of people have found themselves sucked into the celebrity family’s orbit by association. That’s definitely not the case for Beyoncé, who is arguably one of the most famous women on the planet. She doesn’t need to cozy up to the Kardashians in order to boost her reach or to lay the groundwork for potential partnerships.

When it comes to Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé, their relationship is intimately tied to that of their husbands (or, in Kardashian’s case, soon-to-be-ex-husband). Are the women friends? Fans are baffled by just what the connection is between the two celebrity powerhouses.

Jay-Z and Kanye West were once very close friends

Jay-Z and Kanye West’s relationship has been a point of fascination in the hip-hop community. Their professional interactions date back to West’s earliest days when he worked as a producer on Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint. That was in 2001, and by 2004, Jay-Z had given West a record deal on his label. From there, the pair’s relationship has been marked publicly in their lyrics.

West penned “Big Brother” about Jay-Z keeping him at arm’s length while he continued to admire him. They’d had some collaborations over the years, but they all paled in comparison to 2011’s joint album Watch the Throne.  In that moment, the pair were inextricably linked in public persona and creative flow. It looked like the start of a new phase in their relationship.

When Jay-Z and Beyoncé failed to make an appearance at West’s 2014 wedding, however, rumors swirled that things weren’t so great between the musical titans. By the time he released the track “Kill Jay-Z,” Jay-Z appeared to be making public reference to West’s mental health struggles in a way that suggested their relationship was strained: “But if everybody’s crazy, you’re the one that’s insane.”

Are Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé friends?

Just because their then-husbands were friends doesn’t necessarily mean that Kardashian and Beyoncé were close, but there is evidence that the women were friendly. While media reports frequently tried to paint the two women as feuding, there’s never really been evidence of this. They haven’t seemed particularly close, and West and Jay-Z’s falling out has certainly made it more difficult for any interaction between the pair to avoid heavy fan scrutiny.

Still, they’ve gone out of their way to deny any feud and appear to be acquaintances who respect one another professionally even if they don’t spend a lot of time together personally.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z May Be the Richest Power Couple, But These Duos Come Close

The lack of concrete evidence that there is any bad blood between Kardashian and Beyoncé hasn’t stopped fans from taking to Reddit to try to decode the women’s interactions with one another.

One poster suggested that Jay-Z and Beyoncé don’t like the Kardashians and even went so far as to suggest the divorce has opened the door to more collaboration between Jay-Z and West: “now that there’s a potential divorce and Jay has now been back with ye to make music.. coincidence.”

Others suggested that it was less personal and more a professional decision: “I don’t think Bey hates Kim but I think she definitely distances herself from her. Bey is super careful with her image. I dont think her pro black self aligns with the Kardashian brand.”

Still, others speculated that the two just don’t click despite their best efforts: “Have you ever wanted to be friends with someone but could never get past that stage where every exchange ends in an awkward, uncomfortable silence? Maybe Kim and Beyonce have that problem.”

Whatever the case, there’s no real evidence that the pair have a flourishing friendship or that they’re in any specific conflict. They’re two powerful women whose lives have brought them close in professional and personal proximity, but maybe that’s where it ends.
